The University of Chicago\'s Department of Surgery invites applications
for the position of Chief, Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery. We seek
an experienced leader to support and grow the Section\'s clinical,
research, and educational eminence. Appointees will demonstrate
accomplishments in program building with clinical expertise in surgical
approaches to inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and
Crohn\'s disease), colon and rectal cancer, diverticulitis, pelvic floor
disorders, and anorectal disorders. We especially welcome applicants
with leadership experience and interest in academic administration and
who are highly skilled in minimally invasive surgical techniques such as
advanced laparoscopic surgery, transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM),
robotic surgery, and endoscopic procedures. Academic rank (Associate
Professor or Professor), and compensation (including a generous package
of fringe benefits) are dependent upon qualifications.
The Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery is nationally recognized for our
surgeons\' expertise in complicated benign and malignant disorders of
the colon, rectum, and anus. It is a central component of the Digestive
Diseases Service Line, one of the key strategic priorities for the
UChicago Medicine health system for which the Section Chief is expected
to play an important leadership role. The Section currently consists of
5 full-time faculty members as well as a dedicated group of skilled
support staff including physician assistants, medical assistants,
nurses, and nurse practitioners, as well as highly experienced
enterostomal and wound care nurses to ensure a seamless pre-, peri-, and
post-operative experience for every patient. The Chief will provide
visionary leadership, support, and mentoring of faculty and will be
responsible for creating a diverse and inclusive environment in which
all team members can thrive and achieve their fullest potential.
The Chief will be responsible for the research, education, and clinical
service missions of the section and will have the vision to lead and
grow the scholarly program programs in basic, translational, and/or
health services research related to colorectal diseases. The Colon and
Rectal Section Chief will play a leadership role in fostering
collaborations among basic and clinical investigators in our
well-established microbiome research program within the University of
Chicago Digestive Diseases Research Core Center. Since its founding in
1990, the Digestive Disease Research Core Center at the University of
Chicago has stood at the forefront of medical research. Today, we have a
research base of over 50 members. Duties also include oversight of a
highly-competitive ACGME-accredited colorectal fellowship as well as
teaching and supervision of general surgery residents and University of
Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine students.
Prior to the start of employment, qualified applicants must: 1) have a
medical doctorate or equivalent, 2) hold or be eligible for medical
licensure in the State of Illinois, 3) be board certified or board
eligible in General Surgery and Colorectal Surgery, 4) have completed an
accredited fellowship in Colon & Rectal Surgery (or equivalent
training).
