Job Description
Position Overview
As a Staff Engineer in the HVDC Engineering team, you will support the
engineering and construction of cutting-edge long-distance interregional
HVDC transmission projects. You will be a key contributor in
establishing a strategy for planning, designing, and operating
gigawatt-scale renewable infrastructure projects. You will be primarily
supporting the HVDC converter stations and associated AC switchyards,
with focus on managing conceptual project designs, electrical studies,
functional specifications, and the detailed design, construction, and
commissioning of these projects. Projects are located nationwide with
various challenges that will provide you with opportunities to
collaborate with experts in development, interconnections, renewable
engineering, construction, and operations. Transmission systems for
these projects will utilize advanced technologies , focus on increasing
the reach of low-cost renewable energy, and enhance grid reliability.
Responsibilities
- Engineering Design:
- Develop HVDC project designs and specifications that comply with
all critical owner and interconnection requirements.
- Conduct thorough design reviews of physical and electrical
drawings, with support of internal and external expert
specialists.
- Define the scope of required power systems studies/calculations
and conduct thorough reviews of such for accuracy and
compliance.
- Coordinate with interdisciplinary experts in development,
construction, civil engineering, and operations to ensure
comprehensive optimization of project design.
- Track design schedules, update stakeholders, and ensure that
critical dates related to engineering tasks are met on time.
- Support project close out by organizing and transferring
as-built documentation to the final project owner including
physical and electrical drawings, schematics, bill of materials,
engineering studies/calculations, and control and protection
settings.
- Procurement and Construction Support:
- Develop technical exhibits and specifications for project
tenders and support the bid process through response to
clarifications and review of technical conformance.
- Review competitive bids for owner procured HVDC converter
stations, transmission and substation equipment, and other
electrical balance-of-plant material. Support the purchasing of
this equipment and manage suppliers throughout the engineering
and commissioning process.
- Attend in-person coordination meetings with Independent System
Operators (ISOs), interconnection utilities, HVDC equipment
suppliers and constructors, and consulting engineers.
- Monitor construction progress both remotely and via on-site
inspections and support resolution of any field issues. Attend
on-site meetings with electrical construction contractors and
equipment suppliers.
- Perform factory/equipment inspection and witness factory
acceptance testing for major HVDC converter station equipment.
- Engineering Group Responsibilities:
- Assist in developing project specific engineering, equipment,
and construction specifications.
- Prepare and validate power systems stu ies related to steady
state, short circuit, dynamic and electromagnetic transient
analysis.
- Coordinate with HVDC vendors and renewable energy original
equipment manufacturers (e.g. Wind Turbine Generators, Solar PV,
Battery Energy Storage Systems) related to power systems studies
for HVDC projects.
- Coordinate with independent engineers and project partners to
effectively navigate the technical due diligence process.
- Assist in the development of new projects by analyzing
conceptual designs and Requests for Proposal (RFP)
specifications.
- Support early-stage HVDC transmission development by providing
support related choice of Point of Interconnection (POI) and
helping interconnection and grid analysis team with HVDC
modeling using PSS/E and/or PSCAD.
- Coordinate with operations engineering to incorporate lessons
learned into new design reviews and specifications to
continuously improve quality.
