Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biology, Veterinary Technology or Preventative Veterinary Medicine and five years of professional post-degree research experience in the appropriate field; or a Master's Degree and four years of such experience; or a doctorate in the appropriate field and two years of such experience. Preferred Qualifications: Epidemiology and public heath training and experience and training in veterinary medicine. Preference for advanced Master's and Doctoral degrees in addition to veterinary degree. Additional training/certifications such as Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS), or board certification in Veterinary Preventive Medicine. Previous experience as an epidemiologist/public health veterinarian in a state health department.

Duties Description The Research Scientist 4 will have responsibility, under the direction of the State Public Health Veterinarian, for zoonotic disease prevention and control activities in New York State. The incumbent will have primary responsibility for rabies surveillance and prevention, including outreach and education, and policy development, and will provide technical assistance to physicians, local health departments, and the general public on all issues related to zoonotic disease. The incumbent will serve as a project lead to collect and analyze data for rabies and other zoonotic diseases and will prepare reports and scientific manuscripts documenting critical findings for publication in veterinary and public health journals. Potential research projects may include demographic analysis of rabies exposures; analyzing the relationship between prevalence of rabies in wildlife and need for human rabies treatment; and describing the epidemiology of blastomycosis in the state. The incumbent will also assist in developing guidance, epidemiologic tools, and surveillance systems. The individual will provide direct consultation to regional offices and local health departments regarding zoonotic disease prevention, case investigation, and control activities. This position will also provide outreach and education for other state agencies, such as Agriculture and Markets and Environmental Conservation, as well as state veterinary groups, university, local, state and federal agencies to promote zoonotic disease awareness, with a particular emphasis on rabies prevention outreach and education. The incumbent will assist with investigations of other communicable diseases, especially those without dedicate grant-funded staff and as part of emergency responses.
