Sandia National Laboratories R&D Cybersecurity (Experienced) in Albuquerque, New Mexico

Organization 05646, Microsystems Assessments II, is currently seeking an R&D Cybersecurity specialist with experimental experience in side channel and mathematical analysis to be a math analysis lead in a multi-functional lab environment. The selected candidate will be responsible for designing new math analysis tools which utilize various machine learning subject areas, advising small teams of engineers in a lab environment, and developing new research directions and advising management on these priorities. One will also propose new investigations and lead multidisciplinary teams in national level technology assessments. The successful candidate will analyze systems at the interface between hardware and software. Additionally, they will be responsible for mentoring other specialists in mathematical analysis, including leading groups to develop new research ideas.

On any given day, one may be called upon to:

  • Combine and understand data derived from hardware and software experiments, simulations, and paper-based technical evaluations

  • Evaluate hardware implementations from the chip scale all the way up to large integrated systems

  • Build data collection set ups and execute experiments in the lab

  • Develop a path of original research in mathematical analysis

  • Advise technical staff from across the labs on research direction

  • Collaborate with specialists across the Labs and at partner organizations at a national level

  • Communicate technical findings with government and commercial entities in a 1:1 setting or as part of a presentation in front of large audiences


  • A Master's degree in a relevant STEM field plus 6 years related experience working in fundamental research; or a PhD in a relevant STEM field plus 2 years related experience working in fundamental research

  • Experience working in a classified lab environment

  • An active DOE Q-level security clearance; or other equivalent active security clearance such as DOD Top Secret

  • The ability to acquire and maintain an SCI-level clearance, which may require a polygraph test


  • Experience with the following:

  • Successfully mentoring colleagues

  • Developing machine learning algorithms for application to side channel analysis

  • Software (e.g. C and Python)

  • Leading technical discussions about new research in your field

  • Directing a team of engineers or scientists

  • Capability development

  • The ability to acquire program level clearances

  • An ability to multitask and deliver on target dates for a variety of activities

  • The ability to learn and continually upgrade skills

  • Strong oral and written communication skills and an ability to explain sophisticated ideas clearly and concisely (user documentation writing samples may be requested)

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in a team environment

  • A track record of successful proposal writing and funding of high impact projects

The Microelectronics Protection Technologies program assesses, designs, and influences national-security related information systems and technologies by developing and applying tools to analyze complex information systems and technologies for vulnerabilities, and developing and transferring solutions to help protect the nation’s most critical systems. Its mission is to develop and apply tools to analyze information systems and technologies, with focus on microelectronics and microsystems, including vulnerability assessments and technology protection.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
