• Experience with engineering simulation tools to assess part strength, fluid flow, and/or thermal characteristics

• Experience working with testing labs to determine failure mode of parts

Job Description:

The Center for Industrial Research and Service (CIRAS) at Iowa State University is seeking an Engineer III to fill a project manager role. This position is responsible for developing relationships with business leaders, assessing the current state of business operations, and providing testing and analytical expertise.

This role will provide significant improvements in productivity through engineering analysis and process improvement to area businesses. A successful candidate will possess demonstrated excellence across a broad set of experiences in industry roles, with a focus on implementing and managing testing equipment and programs within their organization. Critical skills include testing procedure development, experience with mechanical and nondestructive evaluation testing tools, relationship building, broad business and manufacturing knowledge, excellent verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, exceptional critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills, ability to deal with ambiguity, and strong time management skills. All staff members are expected to maintain the highest standards of integrity and ethical behavior.

This is a fixed term position, with expectation for renewal based on availability of fu nding. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship.

Example of Duties • Performs process improvement and technology implementation project management work for clients.

• Collaborates and assists clients in identification of return on investment and economic impacts of project proposals.

• Assesses multidisciplinary operational, analytical, and technical problems and makes recommendations. • Serves as a consultant to others, providing technical information and engineering recommendations that assist with various projects.

• Leads and participates in public events and workshops focused on delivering the latest research and best practices.

• Manages fee-for-service projects and grants. • Completes complex engineering projects.

Level Guidelines• Senior-level position possessing high-level professional and/or technical skills working independently under minimal supervision to support ISU’s mission and department or work unit goals• Applies senior-level professional knowledge and expertise to work requiring greater latitude• Solves moderately complex problems and regularly exercises judgment to determine appropriate action• Regularly exercises judgment to resolve problems and determine appropriate action on a broad set of issue and problems. May provide recommendations regarding problems/issues outside the bounds of defined procedures and practices• Responds to complicated inquiries, provides training, and provides direction to lower-level staff• May provide supervision for one to two other staff (i.e., leads a small work team)• May lead projects for which well-defined practices and procedures may not exist• Provides guidance to students
