Summary
The Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) at Iowa State University seeks a Teaching Laboratory Specialist II to manage the day-to-day operations in the geotechnical and materials engineering instructional and research fee-for-service laboratories and to coordinate activities at off-campus field locations as needed.
The Teaching Laboratory Specialist will manage the laboratory operation with a strong emphasis on safety, quality, space, laboratory assets and project management. They will instruct undergrad and graduate students on the proper operation of laboratory equipment and assets and will also provide hands-on assistance during laboratory classes to support equipment operation and student learning. This position collaborates with others in sampling, handling, testing and disposition of laboratory specimens and the integration of supporting laboratory test apparatus as required for projects. They will monitor and adjust the rates for the fee-for-service operations for the geotechnical and materials facilities. The Teaching Laboratory Specialist will assist in setting up and executing the instructional laboratories and assist in laboratory and field research in geotechnical and materials engineering.

• Flexibility to work additional hours on occasion in response to the instructional and research laboratory management requirements of the position.
Examples of Duties
• Provides support to faculty, students, staff, and external users of the labs with in-lab and field teaching and research activities.
• Acquires, maintains, and repairs laboratory assets.
• Supervises undergraduate and graduate students working in the laboratory and in the field.
• Assists with laboratory courses in geotechnical and materials engineering, training development and delivery.
• Administers laboratory and field safety requirements.
• Financial management of the geotechnical and materials engineering fee-for-service operations.
• Research-related duties involve collaborating with department faculty and technical support staff to develop and execute standard operating procedures for analytical laboratory instruments and equipment used in laboratory and field research, and serving as a technical consultant, providing support and guidance, to faculty and graduate students designing and conducting research programs.
• Supervises graduate and undergraduate student employees and others as assigned.
