This is a non-represented position (no union affiliation) and is subject to the provisions of the Personnel Rules of the Municipality of Anchorage.

DEPARTMENT: Anchorage Water & Wastewater Utility (AWWU)

HOURS OF WORK: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

LOCATION OF WORK: 3000 Arctic Boulevard

Example of Duties

Under the general direction of the Capital Assets Manager, the engineer will manage and coordinate the Utility’s Asset Management Team in the Engineering Division. The Team is responsible for many efforts including: the collection and analyses of infrastructure condition assessment data; review and analyses of the Utility’s Level of Service goals and performance; hydraulic analyses that optimizes operations of the water and sewer systems; infrastructure life cycle cost analyses of major projects; long and short-term infrastructure planning; and the Utility’s 6-year Capital Improvement Plan (completed annually).

To accomplish these programmatic efforts, the engineer will supervise a team of two (2) engineers and one (1) analyst and have managerial access to professional services contracts. With the assistance of their team, the engineer will be managing and reporting to the Capital Assets Manager and Engineering Division Director on multiple asset management projects from the professional services contracts.

The engineer will perform other related duties as assigned, including participation in major emergencies or disasters as outlined in AWWU’s disaster plan matrix, which defines each employee’s potential duties and responsibilities. This may include 12-hour work shifts, which may continue for 72 hours or more starting at any time an event might occur, seven (7) days a week, 24 hours per day.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field and five (5) years of progressively responsible engineering experience.

Substitution:

  • A Master's degree in Engineering may substitute for the experience on a year for year basis.

Must possess a valid State of Alaska Driver's License by time of hire.

Preferences:

  • Applicants registered as a Professional Engineer in the State of Alaska.

  • Applicants with a Project Management Professional (PMP) Certificate.

  • Applicants have experience supervising technical staff.

  • Applicants have experience in Civil Engineering and utility hydraulic analyses.
