What You'll Do

The Center for Academic Innovation at the University of Michigan is looking for a qualified Media Designer (MD) to join CAI Creative Studios and develop compelling multimedia content to support online and residential educational experiences. You will work within a team to collaboratively design video and other audio/visual content. The Media Designer supports digital learning initiatives through collaboration with world-class faculty at the University of Michigan. You will report to the Media Design & Production Lead, and will work with other members of the Media Design Team and other teams within the Center for Academic Innovation. You embrace challenges, excel at solving tough problems, demonstrate a passion for online education, and work well within a diverse team of artists and academics.

Responsibilities*

  • Collaborate with faculty and project design teams to produce multimedia assets to support online and residential education initiatives.

  • Conceptualize, create, and prepare media of different styles, including: lectures, screencasts, demonstrations, dramatizations, documentaries, tutorials, graphics, animations, and live webcasts.

  • Operate cameras, lighting equipment, audio, teleprompter, wireless microphones, and other related audio/video equipment during studio and field recording sessions.

  • Provide coaching and support for faculty partners during lecture studio recording sessions.

  • Using stylistically appropriate techniques and effects, edit raw video, select music, and design graphics and digital video effects to create high-quality, creative final products.

  • Ensure delivery of content to vendor platforms and other partners.

  • Write and edit scripts for video content, either individually or as a member of a team.

  • Ensure necessary compliance to Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), copyright, permission and licensing processes.

  • Contribute to content quality control evaluation and oversight.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree and 2-3 years of relevant experience in digital media production, broadcasting, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Work well in a diverse and collaborative environment, with an ability to create solutions that meet the needs of both the customer and the organization.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles, practices, techniques, technology, and standards of videography and audio production.

  • Experience operating production equipment, post-production equipment, and non-linear editing software.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in refined and efficient editing of dialogue.

  • Organizational abilities.

  • Experience shooting on location and in-studio video. Advanced experience with technical and logistical issues.

  • Expertise creating motion graphics and designing digital video effects in programs such as Motion, Adobe After Effects, or other graphic design software applications.

  • Capture, engineer, mix and master complex multi-track audio recordings.

  • Experience working with green screens and chroma key technology.

  • Experience writing and developing scripts.

  • Experience working in higher education, particularly in roles supporting faculty.

Additional Information

  • This is not a remote position and any adjustments to a standard in-person schedule will be discussed during the hiring process.

  • You may have occasional non-standard work hours, such as evenings or weekends.

  • You must have legal authorization to work in the United States.

  • Please note: This is a 5 year term-limited position with the possibility of renewal depending on funding.

Salary Information

The general salary range for this position is $57,000 - $62,000. You can expect to be paid a great compensation package. Factors used to determine salary include experience for the

position and internal equity within the unit. You are encouraged to discuss salary questions to honor agreement and transparency throughout the recruiting process.
