Job Summary
A postdoctoral position is available to conduct research that will advance our understanding of the human gut microbiome and inform efforts to modulate its structure and function. We use sequence-based analyses of healthy human microbiomes to develop hypotheses that are tested with pure cultures of microbes, synthetic microbial communities, organoid cultures and gnotobiotic mouse experiments. The ultimate goal of this project is to learn enough about microbes and their interactions with each other and the host so that we can engineering microbiomes to maintain and improve gut barrier function. We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow who will help reach that goal by conducting research with anaerobic microbes as well as integrating and querying multi-dimensional data from our healthy human cohort that includes data from next generation sequencing and metabolomics.
Responsibilities*
Work with a team of researchers to generate data that will advance our understanding of the human microbiome. Conduct wet-lab experiments with bacterial cultures, co-cultures with organoids and mouse models. Analyze data from lab experiments and human microbiome data sets that include DNA sequences, transcriptomes, metabolites and participant data. Write manuscripts and present data at local, national and international meetings focused on the gut microbiome and human health.
Required Qualifications*
Minimum of Ph.D. in Biology or related field of study
Motivation to make discoveries and advance understanding of the human microbiome
Willingness to learn new techniques
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Exceptional ability to work with a team
