Note: This position is located at any of these headquarter locations in District 2: Bemidji, Crookston or Thief River Falls. This position has the flexibility to telework up to three days per week, or work in the office. The incumbent will be required to make a telework arrangement with their supervisor.

Examples of work for this specific, Transportation Specialist , vacancy include but are not limited to:
Designs, oversees and reviews the plan preparation, installation and inspection of signal, lighting and Intelligent Transportation Systems to ensure compliance with state/federal regulations, state electrical codes and state policies/practices.
Develops and reviews signal timing and operations of traffic signals.
Coordinates the implementation of traffic plans in the field.
Performs field investigations and analysis of in place traffic signal, lighting, and ITS devices.
Develops and reviews complete final traffic signal, lighting and Intelligent Transportation System plans, specifications and estimates for project letting ensuring compliance with MnMUTCD, Traffic Engineering Manual and CADD data standards.
Gathers data, performs field work and prepares various study reports independently.
Independently conducts file reviews to assure singing and pavement markings are implemented according to specifications.
Gathers crash information and creates detailed crash studies; updates and maintains the Transportation Information System (TIS) crash database.
Develops and reviews complete final traffic signing, striping, temporary traffic control, signal, lighting and Intelligent Transportation System plans, specifications and estimates for project letting ensuring compliance with MnMUTCD, Traffic Engineering Manual and CADD data standards.

Prepares and reviews complete traffic signing, striping, temporary traffic control plans, specifications and estimates for project letting ensuring compliance with MnMUTCD, Traffic Engineering Manual and CADD data standards.
Develops and implements basic traffic signal timing parameters in accordance with MnDOT standards.
Assists with preparing signing, pavement marking and traffic control work-orders for traffic modifications performed by maintenance crews within set deadlines.
Performs operational and maintenance checks to ensure that signals function correctly.
Reviews the work of contractors to verify construction is conforming to MnDOT specifications/plans and keeps engineer informed as necessary.
Creates, updates, and archives as-build plans.
Gathers field data to complete traffic analysis and investigations of in place traffic control devices and special studies.
Assists in ongoing maintenance and upkeep of the Sign Inventory Management System ISIMS) and TAMS system.
Minimum Qualifications
The incumbent is required to be immediately accessible to a phone and be able to report to work within one (1) hour of being called.
The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Specialist level can be achieved with:
- Four years of experience performing Traffic Engineering activities that included at least two years of experience utilizing computer-aided drafting and designing (CADD);
OR
Three years of experience performing Traffic Engineering activities that included at least two years of experience utilizing computer-aided drafting and designing (CADD) AND one year in any of the following areas: road or bridge maintenance, road construction, design, surveying, materials/soils, right of way, sign repair/installation and/or permits.
Note: A Two year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or the following four year degrees: Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying / Geomatics; or equivalent may substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).
AND
Valid Class D License.
Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Generalist Senior level can be achieved with:
- Two years of experience performing Traffic Engineering activities utilizing computer-aided drafting and designing (CADD)
OR
One year of experience performing Traffic Engineering activities utilizing computer-aided drafting and designing (CADD) AND a combination of one year of experience in any of the following areas: road or bridge maintenance, road construction, design, surveying, materials/soils, right of way, sign repair/installation and/or permits.
Note: A Two year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or the following four year degrees: Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying / Geomatics; or equivalent may substitute for one year of experience. The required passing score for the Math portion is a level 4 or higher and the Reading portion is a level 4 or higher. Preferred Qualifications
- Previous MnDOT experience working as a Laborer, Transportation Associate or Transportation Generalist.
