About our opportunity:

The City of Asheville invites you to apply to be a part of the Parks & Recreation Department’s Athletic Support Staff. The athletics division of Recreation consists of programming for youth, adults and outreach and are looking for staff who have a passion for sports, are energetic, and engaging. Athletic programs take place outdoors in our parks as well as indoors in our community recreation centers. Athletic Support Staff will supervise rentals and facilities during programs, keep score for games, manage athletic equipment, and ensure safety rules and procedures are followed for all participants, coaches and referees.

Hours are generally from 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM with some days and weekends as needed for programming.

This position will NOT be eligible for benefits, paid leave time (vacation, sick, holiday) nor

participation in the retirement system.

Essential Duties and Responsibilites

  • Keeps scorebook for athletic programs and runs a scoreboard.

  • Manages equipment.

  • Provides excellent customer service and communication to patrons.

  • Ensures safety rules and procedures are followed.

  • Provides program set-up and tear-down as scheduled.

  • Supervises rental of facilities.

  • Maintains cleanliness and organization at their workplace.

  • Performs routine park maintenance, such as cleaning out base hubs out and raking field if necessary.

  • Performs incidental janitorial work such as picking up trash, bathroom cleaning, and emptying trash receptacles.

  • Performs related work as required.

  • Keeps accurate scores of ball games and report statistics (basketball, flag football, volleyball, softball and other sports as offered by the City).

  • Maintains ball fields, gym space and other areas of play to ensure safety of participants.

  • Communicates clearly both in writing and verbally with the public and co-workers.

Education and Experience

  • At least 16 years of age.

  • One or more years of experience in recreation and/or participating in athletics is

preferred.

  • CPR/First Aid Certification preferred.

  • Driver’s license is preferred.

Knowledge:

Knowledge of principles and organization of various sports and leagues including how to provide positive customer and personal services to players, coaches, volunteers, and families.

Some knowledge of various City park locations and general functions.

Skills:

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Ability to multi-task in order to adequately keep score, maintain a sports scoreboard and clearly communicate with sports officials and patrons.

Ability to understand and communicate rules of various sports as outlined in rule and regulation guide books.

Ability to lift at least 10 lbs., stand and walk for long periods of time.

Ability to see and hear adequately and to notice unusual conditions.

Ability to acquire knowledge of the rules and regulations related to departmental and/or divisional policies and procedures within a reasonable training period.

Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with City employees and the general public.
