Summary

This position will NOT be eligible for benefits, paid leave time (vacation, sick, holiday) nor participation in the retirement system.

About our opportunity:

The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants to be a part of the 2024 Parks & Recreation Department's Summer Camp Support Staff. Applicants will be working directly with youth ranging from rising 1st -5th grades and rising 6th -9th grades. Staff may be assigned a day camp location or serve community sites through our mobile recreation program.

  • What you’ll be doing:

  • Prepares, organizes, and facilitates daily and weekly activity schedules.

  • Will lead a variety of group games, crafts, and other various activities.

  • Will supervise and participate in all recreational activities with youth. Will safely supervise all field trips, enrichment activities, group activities, etc. for the appointed site.

  • Administer first aid as needed.

  • Responsible for behavior management of participants as needed. Includes recognizing and responding to issues in a timely manner.

  • Documenting issues and communicating necessary information to appropriate persons.

  • Maintains a positive attitude at all times and provides positive customer service to participants and the public.

  • Assists in maintaining cleanliness of the facility or program location after activities and camp work days.

  • Ability to facilitate activities/games for youth.

We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be considered:

  • Leadership skills in a day camp setting are preferred.

  • Required and must be willing to take and be able to pass City provided Adult and Child CPR/American Red Cross First Aid certification class. Unless currently certified.

  • Staff assigned to mobile recreation programs must have a valid driver's license preferred.

Other things to know:

  • Summer camp operates from 8:00 am - 6:00 pm with varied opening and closing shifts, June 10 - August 16. Required staff training and site prep held June 3-7, 2024 with varied hours. Mobile recreation program operates 8:00am-8:00pm with varied morning and late day shifts. Staff may be scheduled for additional night and weekend shifts based on department needs.

SKAs/Performance Aptitudes

  • General knowledge of community recreation work and practices.

  • Should include knowledge for use of equipment and leadership techniques.

  • Familiarity with relevant rules and regulations pertaining to social, artistic, and athletic programs for youth.

  • Ability to facilitate a variety of recreational activities.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, participants, and members of the general public.

  • Ability to enforce city, departmental, and program rules and regulations.

  • Ability to prepare and maintain program records.

  • Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work in both indoor and outdoor settings.

  • Able to handle long periods of standing and physical activities.

  • Some shifts may require prolonged exposure to outdoor working environments.

  • Staff assigned to mobile recreation units must be able to operate a program vehicle; experience driving large vehicles is preferred.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
