Summary

This position will NOT be eligible for benefits, paid leave time (vacation, sick, holiday) nor participation in the retirement system.

About our opportunity:

The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants to be a part of the 2024 Parks & Recreation Department's Summer Camp Support Staff for Therapeutic Recreation. Summer Support Staff will be responsible for program planning and implementation for youth with disabilities ages six (6) through the completion of high school. Summer Support Staff will complete weekly schedules of activities and lead all activities as well.

  • What you’ll be doing:

  • Acts as play leader in group or individual games.

  • Prepares recreation equipment for use.

  • Supervises and/or participates in recreational activities.

  • Organizes group activities.

  • Takes children on field trips.

  • Administers first aid as needed.

  • Attends regular staff meetings to discuss new programs and problems.

  • Performs related tasks as required.

  • Energy and ability to engage with youth with disabilities in summer programming.

  • Strong leadership skills and ability to model mature behavior to youth.

  • Ability to facilitate activities/games for youth.

We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be considered:

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.

  • Experience working in a camp setting for youth with disabilities preferred.

  • Adult and Child CPR/American Red Cross First Aid certifications must be current or obtained by the first day of employment.

Other things to know:

  • Summer Camp Hours are 9:00 am - 6:00 pm with varied opening and closing shifts. Staff may be scheduled for additional night and weekend shifts based on department needs.

  • This position is open until filled with applications being reviewed weekly. Please note that this position starts on June 3, 2024 with some rolling start dates after June 3rd to meet staffing needs.

  • General knowledge of the methods and practices of community recreation work including knowledge of the equipment and techniques, relevant rules and regulations of social, artistic, craft and/or athletic programs for children.

  • Ability to instruct common recreational activities.

  • Ability to enforce rules and regulations and maintain discipline.

  • Ability to prepare and maintain records.
