Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. We are looking for a passionate, high-energy individual to help build the cloud datacenters that power the world’s largest online services.

The Principal Technical Governance Telecom Engineer will fulfill a technical leadership role for Microsoft’s global datacenter telecom discipline. This role entails responding to emerging issues on multiple projects on a global scale. The position will be responsible for leading and directing the internal DCE telecom subject matter experts and external consultants in the design and coordination of telecom and network OSP & ISP physical infrastructure, program and project troubleshooting, documentation creation and updates. This role will serve as a telecom subject matter expert providing key input to other organizations and stakeholders, as well as be responsible for leading internal telecom workgroups and various project assignments. The successful candidate will be responsible for the ongoing development and maintenance of the master specifications, basis of design, and standardization of the global fleet.

This role is located either in one or all hub locations - Atlanta, GA, Washington, D.C., Redmond, WA, San Antonio, TX or Phoenix, AZ.

Relocation support will be provided, and successful candidates will need to relocate or reside within 50 miles of the hub office location.

This role is eligible for hybrid or remote work, up to (50)%.

Responsibilities

The Principal Technical Governance Telecom Engineer  will be responsible for facilitating and supporting the development of Microsoft’s industry-leading datacenter design standards including the development of innovative technology and advanced concept designs.  This role will provide internal documentation support, design management, and process standardization for Microsoft Datacenter Engineering. To be successful in this role the candidate will oversee the delivery of multiple, concurrent Datacenter design and process improvement efforts.  The telecom engineer will engage with key internal stakeholder groups within Microsoft as well as engineering consultants, equipment vendors, and lease providers.   

The successful candidate will work with Datacenter Operations and partner on standards, requirements, and materials as specified; Lead design workgroups and drive cross-functional meetings for multiple, concurrent capital projects. This individual will be tasked to manage issues, decisions and risks, drive initiatives to improve efficiency and quality to scale with the growth of Microsoft. As a critical thinker, the successful candidate will develop SOWs and design documents, then review and critically evaluate bids and options for physical telecommunication infrastructure and optical cabling including both OSP / ISP and structured cabling; and be able to evaluate operational impacts, deployment, and implementation challenges associated with design implementation for both Microsoft Owned facilities and Lease sites; technical lead on telecommunication requirements and master planning impacts for special, non-conforming projects, retrofits, refreshes, and other duties as assigned.

  • Global Engineering/Design spanning all regions to ensure alignment and continuity.

  • Lead weekly global telecom technical meetings.

  • Maintain Master Drawings/Specs, technical playbooks, design guides/standards, technical compliance.​

  • Owner of global telecomdatacenterrequirements.

  • Author Basis of Design updates, EngineeringBulletins, and Lease requirement technical guidanceas required to providetelecom discipline guidance and direction to the worldwide fleet.

  • Collaboration with internal & external customers to determine program-wide network technical delivery requirements & oversee the ongoing updates of multiple datacenter design solutions.   

  • Partner directly with cross organizational teams such as engineering design teams, delivery teams, operations teams, contractors and suppliers.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years of technical engineering experience.

  • 8+ years of large-scale telecommunications experience.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check : This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 15+ years experience in telecommunications infrastructure such as, copper, cable plants, and fiber optics

  • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 10+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience.

  • Professional Engineer, BICSI RCDD, or DCDC certified

  • Knowledge of industry standards, building codes and safety standards including BICSI Standards, TDMM, RUS Standards, ANSI/IEEE/IEC, NFPA, NEC, and building codes.

  • Technical understanding of mission critical environments and the associated telecommunications facility considerations.

  • Ability to lead multiple projects of varying timelines while managing project expectations. 

  • Detailed understanding of structured cabling components. 

  • Familiarity with high-level construction administration.

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally. 

  • Effective written and verbal communications skills.

  • Experience using MS Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel including effective reporting/presentations of project information. 

  • Knowledge of spaces, pathways, cabling, and terminatinghardware supporting infrastructurefor all data center networksincluding WAN, LAN, WLAN, BAS/BMS/EPMS/CEI, DAS, ERRCS, RoIP, AV,&Physical Security.

  • Familiarity with ground-up construction, greenfield and brownfield site development requirements.

  • Action-oriented with a passion for getting things done quickly, efficiently, and effectively.

  • Ability to balance varying responsibilities that span rhythm of business, communications, executive management, and culture.

  • Experience with CAD programs such as AutoCAD or Revit.

Hardware Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
