Federal Aviation Administration Computer Scientist in Atlantic City, New Jersey

Summary The position is a Computer Scientist within ATO Technical Operations, Operations Support, National Airway Systems Engineering (NASE) Group providing second-level engineering support for assigned surveillance, weather and/or navigation systems and associated programs throughout the National Airspace System (NAS). Responsibilities Performs a mixture of routine and multiple and varying assignments under the limited direction of a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced technical specialist. Acts as an individual contributor and/or member of a team in supporting surveillance, weather and/or navigation systems by identifying problems or systems malfunctions. May perform some leadership functions for small projects/programs/teams. Applies experience and detailed technical knowledge of computer science theories, practices and techniques to store, represent and manipulate data. Typical assignments may include: limited computer programming; collecting, recording, and analyzing data/ information; identifying problems; initiating compliance and enforcement actions; and performing investigation and inspection activities. Demonstrates some independence in planning time and using assigned resources to accomplish assignments and small projects. Assists more experience team member in the development of hardware and or software modifications to correct problems with communication systems. Performs basic and/or routine tests and inspects the quality of product. Analyzes technical maintenance documentation for portions of communication systems to ensure proposals are complete, and accurate. Provides assistance to the team in testing efforts, troubleshooting and debugging during testing. Uses computer software concepts to collect data to assists more experienced team members in developing solutions to system problems; and developing software for fixes or enhancements. Works with team in identifying discrepancies, the need for new documents, or changes to existing ones, and modifications, as needed. Contacts are primarily internal to the organizational unit, major subdivision, and ATO with some contact with customers and external organizations. Contacts are typically intended to share information, provide data and/or written analyses, and discuss the statuses of assignments. In some technical areas, may have regular contact with customers and/or external organizations. Established policies/procedures provide guidance for most assignments, but allow some discretion to select the most appropriate approach. Typically receives guidance on selecting approach from a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced technical specialist. May provide recommendations to improve work processes. Frequently refers difficult problems and work issues to a manager, program/project manager, team leader, or more experienced technical specialist when guidelines are not available or applicable. Work is reviewed periodically during assignments and at completion to ensure timeliness and technical compliance with the requirements of the project or other work activity. Work activities typically support the activities of the organizational unit and may affect project/program objectives for the major subdivision and the LOB/SO. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions. In addition to meeting the basic qualifications listed above, to qualify for this position you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to FV-G FG/GS-12. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.
