Primary Purpose of this Position:

Perform all facets of inspection, and evaluate materials, processes, and workmanship to assure compliance with DWS procedures as well as applicable specifications, provisions, and codes. Authority to reject non-conforming work, to stop non-conforming production operations, and to authorize corrective action through the interpretation of the AWS code.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform dimensional and visual inspection of sub-assemblies, assemblies, processes, and final product. Perform first-article inspection, in-process inspection, and final inspection of fabrication processes and finished product.

  • Perform inspection of incoming raw materials and other purchased materials.

  • Perform non-destructive testing to ensure compliance with established specifications, or as requested to support production operations.

  • Document all inspections and maintain appropriate records.

  • Perform calibration / verification procedures on all precision instruments in the shops.

  • Assist in the evaluation / certification of production personnel as instructed by the Quality Assurance Supervisor.

  • Complete documentation using Microsoft office programs such as word, excel, and bluebeam.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Good overall knowledge of steel fabrication practices and procedures, and good knowledge of applicable codes and specifications (AISC, AWS, ASTM etc.).

  • Ability to read and understand DWS shop drawings.

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work without supervision. Possess superior initiative and ambition.

Physical Demands:

  • Stand FREQUENTLY over the course of the 8 to 12 hour work shift.

  • Walk CONTINUOUSLY over the course of the 8 to 12 hour work shift.

  • Sit only during the break and lunch periods.

  • Lift weights up to 30 pounds FREQUENTLY from floor to head, which includes the various tools and blocks utilized in the process of performing the usual work duties during the 8 to 12 hour work shift.

  • Lift weights up to 70 pounds OCCASIONALLY from knee to waist, which includes the various tools utilized in the process of performing the usual work duties during the 8 to 12 hour work shift.

  • Carry weights noted above distances ranging from a few feet to 60 feet.

  • Climb OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY up and down steps, ladders, onto material, or onto conveyors.

  • Stoop or crouch OCCASIONALLY while performing the regular job duties. The position will be held continuously for a few seconds to 15 minutes, depending upon the job.

  • Kneel in the commission of job duties OCCASIONALLY, depending upon the job.

  • Crawl OCCASIONALLY up to 5 feet to access tools, materials, etc.

  • Reach forward FREQUENTLY to perform job duties or to retrieve tools. The employee will OCCASIONALLY be required to reach to full forward extension.

  • Reach overhead OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY to guide material attached to the cranes, to attach the chains from the crane to the material, to locate blocks, or to saw blocks.

  • Push and pull material attached to an overhead crane or jib crane OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY to properly guide into place. Force varies up to 35 pounds.

  • Pull hand over hand OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY to pull chain through material. Force varies up to 70 pounds.

    Non-Material Handling Demands

  • Employee is expected to work 40 hours a week. However, hours including overtime and weekends may be required based on Drake-Williams Steel’s needs.

  • Hear sufficiently to be aware of safety issues

  • Visual ability to read and interpret shop drawings. Safety glasses are required in the shop area.

  • Exposure to heat, cold, wet and humid conditions in the shop area OCCASIONALLY.

  • Exposure to fumes, odors and dusts in the shop area OCCASIONALLY.

  • Exposure to solvents, greases, oils, and coolants OCCASIONALLY.

  • Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment. PPE includes steel-toe safety shoes, hearing protection, safety glasses, gloves, and hard hats.

Tools Required:

Pencil, Tape Measure, Markers, weld gauges, bevel square, levels, other measuring equipment.

Machines Utilized:

Overhead Crane, Jib Crane, Gantry Crane, Pallets, Transfers, and Forklifts.

Experience and Education Required:

  • Minimum of 3 years experience in the structural steel or similar industry.

  • Completion of a 2-year technical degree in NDT, welding, or other applicable discipline from a qualified trade school.
