The eligible list produced from this recruitment will be utilized to fill Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician III (HEMT III) vacancies within Maryland Transportation Authority in the specified counties only.

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) owns, operates, and maintains eight major toll facilities comprised of four bridges, two tunnels, and two turnpikes across the State of Maryland. Nature of Work: The Maryland Transportation Authority is currently recruiting for the Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician III position. This is the advanced level of repair and maintenance work on motor vehicles, diesel-powered equipment and/or construction/maintenance equipment. Employees are responsible for performing routine repair work, standard preventive maintenance services, and assisting with major automotive repairs. Employees are responsible for performing major mechanical repairs, diagnosing various system malfunctions, and extensive overhauls of all types of major automotive and equipment components, assemblies, and sub-assemblies. Employees receive general supervision from a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Supervisor or other designated supervisor.

Employees in this classification are considered essential employees and are subject to being on call 24 hours a day, as may be required to maintain the continuous operation of a facility. Employees must provide the agency with a telephone number where they can be reached. In the event of hazardous weather or highway conditions, employees will be called to duty during off-hours to maintain and repair equipment. This is maintenance work requiring physical exertion that is performed either outdoors under all weather conditions or inside a building. On some assignments, employees may be required to move objects weighing over 50 pounds.

Qualifications

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Four years of experience servicing, maintaining and repairing motor vehicles, gasoline and/or diesel engines, or heavy-duty construction equipment. Two years of the required experience must include servicing and repairing heavy-duty construction equipment and diesel engines.

Notes:

  1. Applicants may substitute additional documented and relevant experience repairing, servicing and maintaining automobiles, trucks, buses or comparable equipment on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

  2. Completion of an accredited training program for Heavy Equipment or Diesel Repair may be substituted for one and one-half years of the general experience. The accrediting body for the training program must be listed on the U.S. Department of Education's Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs.

  3. U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as defined under the Minimum Qualifications may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience.

  4. Certification as a Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can be substituted for two years of the required education. (The two years of experience used to qualify for ASE testing is considered an integral part of this substitution and cannot also be considered separately to meet Education or Experience Minimum Qualifications.)

  5. Certification as a Master Technician in one or more subject areas by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can be substituted for the required education.

Licenses & Certifications

  1. Employees are assigned duties that require the operation of motor vehicles. Employees will be required to possess and maintain a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland as a condition of employment. Applicants must list the license number and date of expiration on the application.

  2. Employees are required to possess and maintain a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) valid in the State of Maryland during the probationary period, depending on the type of equipment operated.

  3. Employees in this class may be required to obtain Special Commercial Driver's License Endorsements for Hazardous Materials and Tank Vehicles depending on the type of equipment operated.

  4. Employees must have satisfied the second level of the employing administration's certification program prior to application. Employees wishing to be transferred or promoted to another administration must pass the administration's specific certification for Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician III.

  5. Employees may be required to obtain their certification in Air Conditioning Recycling and Recovery during their probationary period.

  6. Employees who are required to function in the capacity of Commercial Vehicle Inspector may be required to obtain and maintain their Commercial Vehicle Inspector's License

Special Requirements:

  1. Employees must be available for duty at such hours, day or night, as may be required in order to maintain continuous operation of a facility.

    1. Employees are subject to being on call 24 hours a day and will be required to maintain a reliable communication link for the purpose of emergency call back requirements.

    2. Employees who work with or may be exposed to hazardous materials such as asbestos, lead-based paint or chromium may be required to undergo periodic medical testing and have the ability to wear a respirator.

    3. Candidates will be subject to pre-employment drug testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

    4. Employees in these classifications are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
