Johns Hopkins University Carpentry Shop Supervisor in Baltimore, Maryland

We are seeking a Carpentry Shop Supervisor who will be responsible for directing and supervising the activities of the Carpentry and Lock Shop employees. He/she will be responsible for maintaining operating processes, measuring results, identifying and resolving problems, developing and motivating staff, managing departmental resources, and order material and components for the Carpentry Shop (i.e. fixtures and equipment). The Supervisor must be able to diagnose a variety of carpentry related problems, offer solutions and plans for repairs or corrections, or make independent judgments relating to work schedules, manpower requirements, design and fabricate built in furniture and shelving pieces for faculty and staff. He/she will also serve as liaison with external contractors to coordinate access to JHU property, equipment, and resources as necessary. This position reports to the Building Operations Manager.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Organize, schedule and supervise the Carpentry Shop personnel to complete assigned work orders generated by the Maximo system, including day to day work orders, seasonal and weekend projects all with a high level of craftsmanship.

  • Close completed work orders and provide billing detail when required.

  • Determine and monitor Carpentry Shop inventory levels.

  • Develop and establish a planned schedule to ensure that all carpentry maintenance occur as often as necessary.

  • Order materials, equipment, and components for the Carpentry Shop; maintain an inventory of materials and supplies for the Shop.

  • Maintain JHU quality standards with emphasis on efficiency and safety.

  • Develop strategies to increase efficiency within the Carpentry Shop.

  • Be proactive in identifying problems early before they become significant problems requiring greater resources for resolution.

  • Maintain a safe work environment for direct reports.

  • Train employees on methods and quality.

  • Adhere to rules set forth in the bargaining unit contract.

  • Monitor and document bargaining unit’s grievances, warnings, write-ups and disciplinary actions.

  • Ensure all Carpentry and Lock Shop staff members are productive throughout the course of the work day.

  • Utilize the University’s E210 and Kronos time keeping systems to accurately complete time and attendance reporting for subordinates.

  • Completes other duties as assigned by supervisor.

  • Carries out duties and responsibilities with minimal to no supervision.

  • Makes decisions and establishes work priorities for subordinate staff.

Authority

  • Manages and monitors the performance of subordinate staff, including participation in the hiring process and disciplinary actions.

Communication

  • Must be computer literate and able to read and interpret plans, specifications, and technical manuals.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.

  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.

  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.

  • Ability to see within normal parameters.

  • Ability to hear within normal range.

  • Ability to move about.

  • Ability to lift or move objects up to 50 lbs.

  • Ability to climb and stand on ladders and inspect roofs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

  • Eight (8) years related experience required. Additional education or training may substitute for some experience.

  • Some supervisory experience required.

Starting Salary Range: Min $49,920 - Max $87,360 (Commensurate with experience)
