The Materials and Compliance Engineer will provide expertise in materials and metallurgical sciences as related to material compliance, design, qualification, manufacturing, quality assurance, obsolescence, and field support of aircraft wheels and brakes and brake control systems.
Essential Functions:
* Manage and implement material compliance policy for regulatory requirements such as those related to REACH, PFAS, and RoHS. Advise leadership and management on material compliance matters.
* Direct and conduct surveys of regulated substances in products and processes, and submit material compliance declarations/filings. Monitor and implement updates from regulatory requirements.
* Interface with customers, suppliers, and other departments/sites within Parker on an ongoing basis to maintain material compliance.
* Perform failure analysis of in-service and test hardware. Develop material and processing recommendations and respond to technical questions from engineers and customer support. Provide consultation to product integrity committee and materials review board.
* Analyze and identify materials, alloys, contaminants, corrosion, oxidation, and particles/chemicals in fluids, coordinating with outside laboratories as needed. Perform metallurgical first article inspections.
* Seek suitable alternatives to materials/substances to address obsolescence and maintain supply chain integrity. Recommend equivalent designations for US and international alloys.
* Keep abreast of developments in aerospace alloys, materials, surface treatments, and material characterization techniques.
* Develop and maintain engineering material specifications and databases.
Qualifications:
* Metallurgical Engineering degree or Materials Science degree with a strong background in metallic materials, in combination with 5+ years of relevant experience. Advanced degree is a plus.
* Educational training in plastics, elastomers, composites, and basic heat transfer would be beneficial.
* Proven work experience in the field of material compliance. Relevant training and/or certifications as a compliance specialist would be beneficial.
* In-depth knowledge of requirements associated with REACH, PFAS, RoHS, and other applicable regulations.
* Knowledgeable about metal processing (casting, forging, welding, heat treating, shot peening), metal finishing (anodizing, passivation, conversion coating, plating, painting), and testing of metallic materials.
* Failure analysis experience, and basic understanding of NDT techniques.
* Skilled at metallographic sample preparation, imaging, and microstructure interpretation.
* Experience with Rockwell hardness and micro-hardness testing.
* Working experience with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).
* Working experience with fatigue testing would be beneficial.
* Familiar with SAE AMS, Military, and ASTM specifications and standards.
* Proficient at technical/specification writing and technical report generation.
* Consistent exercise of independent judgment and discretion in matters of significance.
* Excellent planning, organizational, multi-tasking, problem solving, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills to drive tasks to completion.
