DEPARTMENT:  Department of Veteran's Services

RATE OF PAY:  $15.74 per hour entry progressing to $18.58 per hour after 2 years (TS06)

This is a part-time position 29 hours a week with benefits as provided for within the USW part-time labor agreement, although union membership is voluntary.

GENERAL SUMMARY: Performs routine, semi-complex, and complex clerical tasks which require an understanding of departmental activities and exercise good judgment. Provides clerical support for and works under the direct supervision of the Veteran Affairs Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Serves as clerical support to the Veteran Affairs Director. Acts as receptionist, greeting visitors, sets appointments for clients who need services. Frequently interacts with clients, supervisor, and other Bay County staff through written, telephonic, and face-to-face communications.
  2. Assists veterans and/or their dependents in completing or filing applications for non-service connected pension, service connected compensation, death pension, dependency and indemnity compensation, medical care, burial allowances, insurance and other benefits as appropriate
  3. Contact and assist survivors of a deceased veteran in obtaining death benefits such as burial allowances, government grave marker, or other such benefits
  4. Provide advice and assist veterans to connect them with other resources / assistance
  5. Interview veterans and/or their dependents to determine eligibility for benefits and services
  6. Enter claim information on the computer (VetraSpec)
  7. Ensure all timelines are met so the veteran does not lose any potential benefit(s)
  8. Assist veteran/dependents in appealing denied claims. Maintain confidentiality of information concerning the clients.
  9. Depending upon department assigned will:
    • Set up legal files including defined data
    • Calculate interest and late charges, receive and record fees and charges. Balances small to medium accounts.
    • Complete case closing activities, records case progress and change and arranges for computer processing.
    • Serves as secretary to small boards taking notes and preparing summary of minutes.
  10. Attends workshops, seminars, and conferences and confers with professionals in order to keep up to date on the latest changes in Federal and State laws and regulations
  11. Assist the Veteran Service Officer with processing emergency relief claims
  12. Coordinate the ordering of VA furnished headstones and grave markers
  13. Utilize the County's financial software program
  14. Files reports, maintains files, and purges files when appropriate. Attend staff meetings as well as maintain notes of those meetings.
  15. Punctual and consistent attendance is an essential function of this position.
  16. All other job duties as assigned.
