Job Summary/Basic Function

About the Role:

Responsibilities include servicing, troubleshooting, and repairing commercial industrial air handlers, fan coil units, VAV boxes, recirculation pumps, residential package units, gas-fired boilers, ice machines, and other associated equipment. This position is at the assistant level, but the employee will be required to perform less technical tasks independently. Employees are reminded that they represent both the department and the university and are expected to maintain a clean, neat and professional appearance while on duty. The candidate will routinely work with other crafts and will be required to monitor contracted work and provide training to subordinate employees. This position is considered as essential, and employees will be required to work as scheduled when University offices are closed due to emergency situations or natural disasters. These specialists work under the direct supervision of the HVAC /R Supervisor, in the Facilities Maintenance department.

What You’ll Do – Position Duties

  • Adequate knowledge of the HVAC trade and theory of HVAC systems.

  • Materials, methods and tools used in the operation and repair of HVAC systems

  • Ability to troubleshoot and maintain gas-fired boilers, and associated equipment

  • Knowledge of central plant operations, to include commercial chillers and associated equipment

  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing and be able to understand and follow oral and written directions.

  • Have knowledge in electrical and plumbing, necessary to diagnose and repair HVAC related equipment

  • Have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and email applications.

  • Maintain flexibility and be available for duty during short-notice or urgent situations.

  • Work cooperatively with others and maintain excellent customer service.

  • Work independently with little direction, meeting schedules and timelines.

Key Competencies:

  • Broad knowledge in repairing and servicing HVAC and associated equipment.

  • Some experience in electrical and plumbing, necessary to adequately diagnose/repair HVAC related equipment is expected.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and email applications.

  • Experience working with a Computerized Maintenance Management System.

  • Employees are expected to lead by example, demonstrating the highest level of ethics.

  • Employees are expected to work together to meet the needs of the department and university, by providing exemplary customer service to the staff, faculty and students.

Physical Requirements:

  • Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work.

  • Some combination of climbing and balancing, to include climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling, crawling, working at heights and working in confined spaces.

  • May involve the lifting of moderately heavy objects, up to 45 pounds.

  • Requires a full range of physical motion to operate manual/electrically powered tools.

Minimum Qualifications

  • An associate degree or completion of a formal technical training program within the field of HVAC or related field.

  • A high school diploma or GED .

  • Three (3) years of job-related experience in the HVAC career field.

  • Experience in a construction industry trade, or building maintenance in an apartment complex, school or similar setting.

Certification(s) Required:

  • Certification in a technical training program within the field of Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration.

  • A valid Texas driver’s license.
