Overview of MAF Function and the TA Head role

The TA Head is responsible for leading the medical team of Medical Advisors, MSLs & Medical Education teams to formulate medical strategy that is aligned to the overall XJP strategy, to provide medical support for the Janssen Business Units and the associated pharmaceutical products, and providing medical education for healthcare stakeholders in related therapeutic areas, and to generate important medical data. In this role, the head also valid the plan basing on the solid insights analysis, in engaging with and collaborated with KOLs & HCPs, and also ensure the effective working model for collaboration with internal stakeholders such as BUs, R&D, HCC, Legal, Finance, AP MAF & AP Marketing and various global colleagues. TA Head needs to make sure medical events, projects, trials and communication materials following the SOPs and keeping the high quality and compliance.

Job Description

Overall purpose of job:

Develops strategies, policies, and objectives of medical affairs to achieve TA objectives and support MAF and company value propositions.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Develop and deliver Medical Affairs TA strategic objectives and plans in support of overall company objectives.

  • Drive TA strategies, goals, and activities, improving quality and enhancing compliance.

  • Ensure the provision of high-quality TA Medical Affairs activities, Therapeutic Area and Product Medical Strategy, Customer Engagement, Evidence Generation, and Medical Education in support of strategic objectives.

  • Monitor development and implementation for clinical trials, including protocol, team building, and budgeting as it relates to strategic initiatives.

  • Drive effective collaboration with other functions (for example, Commercial, R&D, Market Access, Safety and Quality, Supply Chain, Procurement, and Regulatory), and with key opinion leaders across the market.

  • Maintain and leverage relationships with experts and other important external stakeholders to optimize the development of product strategy, medical education and scientific interaction.

  • Partner with the established products group to provide medical input for lifecycle extension opportunities. Ensure that Local Medical Affairs Leaders manage product-related medical safety issues and provide input to the Pharmacovigilance and Safety Management Teams, escalating as appropriate.

  • Managing budgets for Clinical studies, Medical Education & Medical Affairs events. Determine and monitor timelines and manage projects implementation.

  • Building efficient organization structure, lead and manage medical team for MA, MSL and ME through providing training, supporting and coaching. Identify and develop key talents for the team growing.

  • Lead talent strategy to attract, develop, and retain core talent, and build and maintain a diverse, high-performing medical organization.

Qualifications

  • Essential knowledge and skills:

Education

  • Master Degree or above of clinical medicine or pharmacy. M.D. and PhD preferred.

Working experience

  • 10 years of pharmaceutical industry experience overall experience in medical affairs, clinical research, and new product development.

  • At least 5 years of Medical Affairs in a leading role with people management are required.

Knowledge & skills

  • Credo-based leader with a strong focus on patients’ interests and a deep understanding of HCC and legal requirements.

  • In-depth understanding of the pharma industry in China and globally, current status, and future trends in related TA.

  • Deep understanding of regulations in China and globally, as well as Rx therapeutic categories.

  • Substantial experience in practicing clinical medicine and clinical research.

  • Experience and success in working in a highly matrix, cross-functional environment, excellent collaboration skills, experience working across functions to achieve results.

  • Demonstrated ability in strategic thinking, good planning & tracking and contingency planning with respect to pharmaceutical objectives.

  • Track record in formulating strategies and delivering strong outcomes.

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment with proven capability to lead and develop a high-performing team.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills particularly in listening, persuasive communication, analytic, conflict management, influencing skills, and capability. Good problem-solving skills for developing creative solution.

  • Budget planning and implementation skills are essential.

  • Good command of English both in written and verbal.
