Avangrid Service Company Lead Analyst - Energy Buyer in Binghamton, New York

Pay Range: $76,100 - $05,200

JOB SUMMARY:

Scope of Work - Main duties, settings, geography, reporting relationships, other relationships:

This position, with limited supervision, is responsible for natural gas-related transaction/activities as follows:

1. Serves as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for assigned NYSEG, RG&E, and/or Maine Natural Gas (MNG) gas load areas.

2. Manages a portfolio of gas pipeline transportation, storage, and supply assets for assigned gas load areas within contractual and/or tariff parameters in order to procure the best cost and most reliable gas supply for utility commodity customers.

3. Maintains knowledge of all natural gas load areas and their characteristics for NYSEG, RG&E, and MNG.

4. Develops and effectively executes physical and financial hedging plans to each companies open positions within approved risk management guidelines. 5. Communicates with suppliers and pipeline representatives on a daily basis. 6. Interacts with management roles at NYSEG, RG&E, and MNG up to the Senior Director level, on rare occasions may interact up to the President/CEO level.

7. Maintains vast working knowledge of Company policies, industry standards and trends, and natural gas markets and pricing.

8. Has a direct impact on Customer and Shareholder value via various optimization activities at NYSEG, RG&E, and MNG, including via NYSEG and RG&E's NYPSC-approved Gas Cost Incentive Mechanism (GCIM).

9. May represent the Companies in pipeline and supplier customer group meetings and negotiations. Participates in various regulatory and technical proceedings.

10. Participates in on call activities as required, including weekly rotation and critical period coverage.

MAJOR ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Scope of work - range of responsibilities):

1. Interprets multiple gas demand forecasts to make daily, monthly, and winter-term gas purchasing decisions to meet customer requirements in a best cost and reliable manner.

2. Conducts various regression analyses and other studies to forecast annual, monthly, and peak day natural gas demand.

3. Purchases, schedules, and documents gas supply, capacity release, and Off-System Sales (OSS) transactions in accordance with all internal controls, the Energy Services Risk Management Procedures Manual, and all FERC, NYPSC, and MPUC rules and regulations.

4. Manages assigned transportation and storage capacity assets, including daily evaluation of pipeline operating conditions to promote system integrity. Executes monthly and daily capacity release transactions to ensure the maximum value for the Companies transportation capacity is recovered. Executes off-system sales.

5. Maintains working knowledge of interstate and intrastate pipelines and associated markets, including the tracking of nominations on multiple interstate and intrastate pipelines to ensure supplies are scheduled at 100%.

6. Demonstrates an in-depth understanding of natural gas pricing trends and triggers.

7. Prepares various reports essential to monthly closing procedures, including, but not limited to, gas purchase summaries and cash out calculations, for submission to internal and external parties.

8. Maintains and verifies records of all transactions and usage related to natural gas delivered to the Companies citygates and billed dekatherms.

9. Prepares monthly Gas Supply Charge and Cost of Gas calculations, setting commodity cost rates to be publicly published with the NYPSC and MPUC.

10. Prepares Gas Cost, Capacity, GCIM budgets. Prepares annual Storage Forecasts.

11. Demonstrates in-depth understanding of the Companies hedging strategy and executes physical and financial hedging transactions in accordance with the approved Hedge Schedule.

12. Leads optimization, Winter-Term RFP, and Asset Management Agreement (AMA) activities for NYSEG, RG&E, and MNG.

13. Monitors interstate/intrastate pipeline regulatory filings, and FERC, NYPSC, and MPUC rule making and proceedings.

14. Accurately complete deal tickets, confirm transaction details, and enter transactions into the Energy & Commodity Trading and Risk Management (E/CTRM) system and in compliance with Energy Services Risk Management Procedures Manual.

15. Maintains knowledge of FERC-approved interstate pipeline tariffs.

16. Participates in rate or other proceedings, such as technical conferences, as assigned. Completes research and analysis to support Company response to data requests from various regulatory entities or within rate proceedings.

17. Seeks out, researches, and presents SME-level recommendations of opportunities to diversify supply, capacity, or delivery options via industry knowledge, contacts, and networking to the Manager, Gas Supply. May present up to the Senior Director, Energy Services level.

18. Completes special projects, as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience Required:

  • This position requires minimally an Associate's Degree from an accredited college/university in in Engineering, Economics, Finance, Business Administration or Sciences with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience required, or a Bachelor's of Science/Arts Degree from an accredited college/university in Engineering, Economics, Finance, Business Administration or Sciences with a minimum of 3 years relevant experience preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in wholesale commodity acquisition and supply preferred. Similar experience with corporate purchasing and contract management, energy accounting and/or experience with SAP functions related to purchasing, supply management and accounting may be partially substituted for experience with wholesale commodity markets.
  • Knowledge/experience in natural gas transportation and storage operations/activities is preferred.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong critical thinking, analytical, mathematical, problem solving, and organizational skills.
  • Strong ability to work collaboratively and contribute as a member of a team to develop and implement risk mitigation strategies.
  • Strong computer skills, particularly with Microsoft Excel.
  • Highly developed clear and concise written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively manage time, prioritize work, and multi-task across multiple assignments.
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and results oriented.
  • Strong negotiation and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage both cloud and software-based databases.
  • Extensive knowledge of E/CTRM Deal Tracking System
  • Ability to interpret Tariff language. Understanding of Federal, State and Corporate Regulatory Compliance reporting requirements.
