Summary Statement

The City of Boise is currently recruiting for a Temporary Industrial Maintenance Worker I to perform custodial duties, groundskeeping, and other light maintenance at the West Boise Water Renewal Facility. This is a temporary assignment, up to 40 hours a week for 9 months.

  • Performs a wide variety of grounds and facilities maintenance in a wastewater treatment facility

  • Work includes a variety of construction, plumbing, landscaping, pouring and patching of concrete, and related duties

  • Assists with inventory management of equipment and supplies commonly used

  • Work is performed under general supervision and direction

Essential Functions

Performs skilled construction, carpentry, drywall, painting, cabinetry, plumbing, masonry, roofing, maintenance and repairs of industrial building and facilities. Operates and maintains a variety of hand and power tools. (30%)

Performs skilled installation and maintenance of landscaping and facility grounds. Installs, maintains and repairs irrigation systems, fences, gates, concrete sidewalks, walkways and parking lots. Operates and maintains grounds equipment and tools. (30%)

Maintains a safe, clean and orderly work environment. Performs janitorial duties. Repairs and cleans floors, showers, sinks, toilets, walls, roofs, stairways and carpets. (20%)

Operates light- to medium-equipment to load and unload trucks, dig trenches, transport materials within a facility and perform snow removal. (10%)

Supports special projects and activities when assigned. Attends and completes assigned training as required to ensure compliance with city policy, state and federal regulations. (10%)

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training

  • High school diploma or equivalent, and

  • 2 years of experience performing facilities maintenance and repairs, including concrete patching and operating various hand and power tools, or

  • An equivalent combination of education/experience

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training

  • Four years of experience in performing grounds and facilities maintenance, including minor electrical, plumbing and construction

  • Wastewater Operator Class I license

Ability To:

  • Perform varied facilities maintenance and cleaning

  • Operate a wide variety of equipment and tools including mowers and drills safely

  • Utilize related protective gear and safety equipment

  • Identify and prioritize additional tasks

  • Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance

  • Perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation

  • Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record

Level of Knowledge:

  • General facilities maintenance to include minor electrical, plumbing and construction methods and safety standards

  • Blueprint reading

  • Hard surface maintenance and repair

  • General landscape care

  • Trench construction

Licensing And Other Requirements

  • Valid state-issued driver's license

Applicants must be able to pass:

  • City of Boise background check processes which includes a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation

Working Conditions

Physical Efforts

While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally lifting/carrying up to 35 pounds and rarely lifting/carrying up to 75 pounds. Also, the employee is occasionally pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds and rarely pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds. The noise level is occasionally moderate and rarely loud. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear, smell and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, runn, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.

Working Environment

The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, in wet and humid conditions, areas of dust, odors, mist and gases or other airborne matter. Employees are exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards, work in/at heights and confined spaces. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria, bodily fluids and chemicals. Employees work in industrial areas near open tanks and ditches, on stairs and uneven surfaces and are subject to slip hazards caused from ice/snow in winter, wet floors, uneven and undeveloped work surfaces. Work may be performed/assigned at any of the city’s public works utilities and may work at remote or isolated facilities a considerable distance from supporting resources.

This position works: evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
