Job Summary

The Integrated Teaching and Learning Program (ITLP) encourages applications for the Manufacturing Center Specialist! The Manufacturing Center Specialist provides technical expertise, instructional support and student staff supervision for the ITLP's Manufacturing Center (MC). This position works collaboratively with Integrated Teaching and Learning Laboratory (ITLL) MC staff to increase the capabilities of the MC to best serve the needs of thousands of engineering students each year. The position is responsible for supporting engineering design courses and providing instructional support to engineering students through regular workshops and trainings, while also maintaining oversight and safety at all times. The position sources new equipment to maintain an innovative facility. They also maintain existing equipment to enhance student productivity. Success in this position requires experience with manual and CNC machining, woodworking, prototyping, knowledge of mechanical systems & engineering processes, and strong interpersonal communication skills. Proof of eligibility to work in the United States must be produced within three (3) days of hire. Must be a current Colorado resident to apply.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Multi-Axis CNC Machining:

  • Serves as an authority for all CNC machine-related requests.

  • Maintains the CNC machines and ensures their appropriate usage.

  • Proficiently uses CAD/CAM software systems, including Mastercam, Solidworks, Fusion 360, and others.

  • Operates CNC simulation software to ensure safe, collision-free machining operations.

  • Partners with ITLP IT team to determine hardware/software configurations to provide students with the latest and most advanced CAD/CAM solutions.

  • In cooperation with service partners, routinely performs multi-axis CNC calibration to maintain machine accuracy.

  • Maintains a robust tooling and fixture library to meet the diverse needs of student projects.

Manufacturing Center Innovation & Operation:

  • Continuously identifies and implements new manufacturing equipment and capabilities to improve the resources and services in the ITLL Manufacturing Center.

  • Leads the fabrication facility by ensuring maintenance, repairs, calibration, and upgrades of MC equipment and tools.

  • Trains and mentors a team of student staff in appropriate safety policies and procedures, machine operation, and supporting engineering student projects.

  • Stays abreast of proven manufacturing and machining industry practices for implementation in the Manufacturing Center.

  • Identifies, orders, assembles and installs MC equipment, including large capital expenditures.

  • Inventories and orders materials and tooling as needed.

  • Communicates emergency repairs or lengthy maintenance procedures to all internal partners.

  • Cultivates a safe, organized, and clean MC environment in which no injuries occur by ensuring that safety practices are always employed and followed.

  • Continuously improves the workflow and physical layout of the MC to facilitate safe and efficient use of the MC while supporting an increasing number of users.

  • Maintains multiple modes of communicating shop information to users, including website information, entry bulletin board, and shop signage that ensures a welcoming and informative environment.

Instructional Support:

  • Provides manufacturing expertise and support to students and instructors of various design courses.

  • Works in a cooperative and collaborative manner with CU engineering faculty and ITLP staff to best serve the educational needs of engineering students.

  • Creates, develops, and leads individual and group hands-on manufacturing skill-building workshops, including workshops on safety, saws and drills, introduction to machining, and advanced CNC machining.

  • Provides guidance, expertise, and troubleshooting advice to engineering students and staff on manufacturing and machining projects.

  • Constantly improves workshop performance by soliciting and analyzing workshop feedback.

  • Works with ITLP administrative staff on assessment techniques that analyze feedback from MC users to assess the quality of the facility and instructional services.

Specialized Program Support:

  • Collaborates with the ITLP operations team to lead building improvement and renovations projects.

  • Partners with ITLP engineering team to support the design and fabrication of new hands-on experiments.

Other:

  • Undertakes other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

  • Stays apprised and current on relevant University and State of Colorado policies and procedures.

  • Participates in professional development activities and serves on unit, college or campus committees as applicable.

What You Should Know

9:30am - 6:00pm or 10:30am - 7:00pm during the academic year, option to work 8:30am-5:00pm during summer and other breaks.

What We Can Offer

The salary range for this position is $64,440-$71,200.

If you have prior state-classified experience in the same class series as this position, your pay may be set at a higher amount per the state Step Pay Program (https://dhr.colorado.gov/state-hr-professionals/compensation/2024-step-pay-program-for-state-of-colorado-employees) implemented on July 1, 2024.

What We Require

  • Must be a Colorado resident to apply.

  • Four years of machining or manufacturing experience. An equivalent combination of education and training may substitute on a year-for-year basis.
