  • An understanding of and ability to manage confidential information.

Additional Information:This is a hybrid position which we consider to be a combination of remote and onsite work at our Boston, MA based campus. HBS expects all staff to be onsite 3 days per week and departments provide onsite coverage Monday – Friday. Specific hours and days onsite will be determined by business needs and are subject to change with appropriate advanced notice.

  • Provides holistic research support to faculty by facilitating coordination across HU and HBS service providers, including navigating HBS's and HU’s research enterprise and connecting with research resources across the University. Serves as a bridge and a translator where needed.

  • Offers individual consultations to faculty to help them operationalize their research plans and programs.

  • Meets with new faculty and helps them transition their existing portfolio of research projects to HBS, ensuring they are up and running as quickly as possible upon their arrival.

  • Proactively touches base with faculty throughout their research project to assist with any administrative and/or support issues, e.g., compliance needs, resource usage policy questions, service gaps.

  • Helps to lower barriers so faculty can stay on track toward their goals.

  • Acts in an advisory capacity on strategic research and operational issues.

  • Plays a role in the development of policies and practice guidelines related to faculty research and faculty development, and in determining how they should be applied to specific situations.

Research Planning:

  • Working with partners across the DRFD (including Business Operations, Faculty Administration, Research Administration, and Research Staff Services), facilitates the annual and supplemental research planning and funding processes.

  • Reviews annual planning form submissions and supplemental budget requests from faculty members and identifies gaps in information or understanding and works with them to develop a complete picture of their needs. Supports research governance in making funding decisions.

  • Oversees process logistics. Coordinates the development of materials for faculty governance meetings and presentations by gathering inputs from all pertinent research support partners.

  • Advises faculty on HBS and HU research policies and procedures and connects them to the Director, Research Funding, for guidance on expense policies; plays a key role as a trusted advisor on research planning. Recommends and connects faculty to support resources.

  • Meets with new faculty about their research and research needs and provides guidance on resources and funding available.

  • Stays current on HBS faculty research, proactively collecting and analyzing data to identify trends bringing focus to strategic issues and providing context for related faculty discussion and strategic decision making.

  • Highlights connections and patterns across faculty research needs, and across research support processes.

  • Ensures the needs of the faculty and other partners across HBS are met through the services and resources provided.

DRFD Administration:

  • Provides senior level staff support to the Executive Director, Managing Director, DRFD and other DRFD administrators on a broad range of research planning and facilitation matters that support the HBS faculty, their research, and faculty governance.

  • Contributes to the annual School-wide budget process by informing stakeholders on faculty research trends and needs. Plays a key role in the DRFD’s preparation of documents used for strategic decision making by the School’s budget committee.

  • Contributes to overarching strategies and approaches; focuses on problem resolution, process improvement, and programmatic innovation.

  • Supports ad hoc projects related to the development, management, and dissemination of intellectual capital. These projects may include gathering specific information from or about faculty, general research, and data manipulation, synthesis, analysis, or presentation.

  • Partners with colleagues across the DRFD in the creation, maintenance, and reporting of faculty research output data in a variety of formats targeted to a wide range of audiences.

As part of this team, the Director’s focus is ensuring that HBS faculty members receive the highest level of support in pursuit of their research agendas. The Director develops and leverages a deep understanding of faculty research at both a micro-level (i.e., the needs of individual faculty) and macro-level (i.e., the needs of the overall HBS research community), extrapolating themes across faculty requests and contributing to the team in identifying and responding to trends.

The Director makes contributions in three ways: (a) they help faculty members navigate the research support infrastructure available to them at HBS; (b) they play a coordinating role in the design and execution of internal funding processes in close partnership with the Director, Research Funding; and (c) they collaborate with DRFD colleagues on a broad range of research matters with and for the HBS faculty and faculty governance.
