    Job Description

FINANCIAL COORDINATOR, Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE), to serve as a key member of the department’s research operation with responsibility for general compliance of department and research accounts. Will coordinate sponsored programs and perform diverse financial duties such as preparing, reviewing, and submitting budgets; reconciling and auditing monthly accounts; and preparing and analyzing financial reports for multiple accounts/projects. Responsibilities include advising principal investigators/faculty, researchers, and staff on matters pertaining to research administration; coordinating the preparation, review, and submission of budgets and/or grant proposals following appropriate MIT/sponsor/donor policies/procedures; research and fellowship proposal development, submission, account set up, extensions, and closeouts; tracking and monitoring the financial performance of grants/contracts to ensure compliance; creating, implementing, and maintaining various financial systems for multiple accounts; monitoring and managing payroll distribution and salary distribution changes; forecasting account balances; authorizing expenditures; generating monthly/quarterly/annual budget reports, performing budget forecasts and financial analyses; monitoring select financial and/or research accounts, coordinating invoice payments, initial account setups, extensions, and closeouts; monitoring account balances for overruns and preparing accounts receivable invoices; monitoring the financial review and control process, resolve delinquent travel; and handling special projects and other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: bachelor’s degree; two years’ finance/accounting experience; comfort working with complex calculations and budgeting; demonstrated sound judgment and attention to detail and continuous improvement; ability to multitask, quickly meet short turn-around times, and perform hands-on work in a team-based work group; excellent organizational, problem-solving, analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills; and proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel. PREFERRED: familiarity with federal research regulations and academic programs and administration; and experience with SAP, Kuali Coeus, QuickBase, and electronic proposal submission software.
