Position Description

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Controls Engineer will reside with the Carteret Terminal facilitating the priorities of the Supervisory Controls and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Group. The successful candidate will be working for one of the largest energy infrastructure companies in North America. The position will report to the Regional Technical Support Group. The successful candidate will work to create records, enforce standards, and develop solutions for technical problems with regards to systems’ controls. This will include working with a team to be responsible for the implementation, coordination and general oversight of all SCADA, electrical and instrumentation activities at the terminals. Additionally, assisting maintenance in remote and onsite troubleshooting for solving facility automation and controls problems. Periodic on-call services to directly support the terminal will also be expected.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the electrical and instrumentation activities in the terminal to include working with and training both technicians and contractors to ensure asset integrity, company standards and continuous service. Assets include but are not limited to power distribution, lighting, tank gauging systems, meters, valve actuators, alarm systems, SCADA/PLC/HMI, flow computers, control systems, data communications systems, system servers and clients.

  • Assist in supporting the facility’s technical systems on the business network to include maintenance intervals of IT and network related equipment on a SCADA and business network.

  • Participate in the design and testing of Allen Bradley PLC’s.

  • Implementation of PLC Logic and related automation network following existing Kinder Morgan standards.

  • Participate in the analysis, review and design of Safe Chart (Cause and effect) drawing.

  • Participate in a Factory Acceptance Test.

  • Provide SCADA system hardware, software, RTU/TCP Modbus, ethernet network support for maintenance, controllers, operators and other business groups.

  • Ensure that KM SCADA system procedures and standards are met.

  • Work as part of a group to provide SCADA system administration, management, and support functions where support includes day-to-day activities required to support the departments that use the SCADA System.

  • Ensure that KM SCADA system procedures and standards are met.

  • Coordinate with Engineering, Control Center, and Operations personnel to ensure that SCADA system meet customer requirements.

  • Maintain and update records of all preventive maintenance inspections and reactionary repairs to electrical and instrumentation equipment.

  • Support Engineering Department by providing specifications, topological and physical development plans, documentation and other information and resources required for Capital Projects.

  • Occasionally manage assigned Capital Projects related to technological, electrical & instrumentation.

  • Effectively coordinate daily system controls activities with Maintenance, Operations, Technical Services and Terminal Management.

    Position Requirements

Education

  • Preferred associate’s degree (or higher) from a technical school or college in a related field

Capabilities

  • Physical ability to lift 35 lbs., twist and bend, climb tanks up to 60 feet high and climb ladders.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and a driving record satisfactory to the company and its insurers.

Experience, Specific Knowledge, Certification, Licenses

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in an industrial, unionized, heavy equipment setting. Oil or chemical terminal or process experience is preferred.

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a front-line supervisory or foreman position. Experience with unionized workforce a plus.

  • Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Software Systems.

  • Factory training & experience with various Rockwell Automation PLC (SLC, PLC-5, ControlLogix) platforms a plus.

  • Experience with Windows Servers OS and Hyper-V for virtualization.

Working Conditions

  • Office & workshop environment. Often outdoors in the terminal yard, at times in inclement weather.

  • Travel will be required.

  • May be required to work additional hours to meet the needs of the terminal.

  • May serve in an ‘on-call’ capacity during nights and weekends.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • May be responsible for the performance of hourly electrical and instrumentation personnel and/or contractors.
