Summary

This is the career/senior level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level manage work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. They are fully competent in use of concepts and procedures. They identify problems, develop solutions, and take actions to resolve. Senior Nuclear Engineer represents a level at which career may stabilize for many years.

An Equipment Reliability (ER) Engineer is part of the Corporate Plant Reliability Engineering team responsible for implementation and oversight of the Equipment Reliability program. Duties include but are not limited to serving as the station ER Lead and Maintenance Rule (MR) Coordinator for up to two sites. Day to day responsibilities will include coordinating with nuclear site and corporate leaders to strategically address equipment reliability issues. This includes developing agendas for and facilitating all Plant Health Sub-Committee and Plant Health Committee meetings to drive the highest standard for equipment reliability, assisting site counterparts move various ER related products through ER processes, maintain the site MR program and facilitate all MR Expert panel meetings, coordinate with the other ER Leads to implement fleet ER initiatives, implement innovation projects to streamline the ER process, and maintain ownership for fleet level equipment reliability procedures. As an ER Lead, this position requires routine interface with Site and Corporate Senior Leadership on a routine basis in both one on one and meeting settings.

The position is located in the Charlotte Corporate Office and reports directly to the Director of the Plant Reliability group in the Corporate Office. This position supports a hybrid work posture with work split between in the office and remote. The position is a normal office working environment with on-site support as needed.

Responsibilities

With Minimal Supervision:

  • Develops and maintains positive working relationships with site and corporate teammates to effectively coordinate work activities.

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of typical responsibility.

  • Implement the Duke Energy Nuclear Equipment Reliability program in accordance with AP-913, Equipment Reliability Process Description.

  • Develop Plant Health Subcommittee and Committee agendas and implement the respective committee meetings to address equipment reliability concerns.

  • Manage and implement site Maintenance Rule Programs.

  • Manage Fleet Equipment Reliability Processes and Procedures.

  • Implement Fleet Equipment Reliability initiatives such as Single Point Vulnerability Reviews, INPO IER responses, ER assessments, etc.

  • Assess site ER performance against WANO 2019-1, WANO Performance Objective and Criteria, identify any gaps to the WANO standard, and develop recommended actions to close any performance gaps.

  • Completes equipment reliability innovation projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and external organization interfaces; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.

  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results.

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, and documentation to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.

  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Basic / Required Qualifications – Nuclear Engineer III

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.

  • Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer. Experience must have been attained at a "Fully Meets" performance level.

Basic / Required Qualifications – Senior Nuclear Engineer

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.

  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer. Experience must have been attained at a "Fully Meets" performance level.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Registered Professional Engineer

  • Proficient in principles of project management

  • Experience in the utility industry.

  • Experience with the industry Equipment Reliability Working Group (ERWG).

  • Experience with INPO AP-913 (Equipment Reliability Process Description) and WANO 2019-1 (WANO Performance Objective and Criteria).

  • Experience with NRC Maintenance Rule 10 CFR 50.65, Requirements for Monitoring the Effectiveness of Maintenance at Nuclear Power Plants.

  • Experience managing financial long-range plans for Nuclear Power Plants.

  • Experience with day-to-day nuclear site schedules and operations.

Job-Specific knowledge, skills, or abilities

  • Proficient in engineering theories and principles.

  • Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.

  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Proficient in principles of project management.
