Summary description: The Hargrave Community Counselor is part of a team responsible for the emotional and mental well-being of enrolled students within the Hargrave school community. Hargrave Military Academy is an all-boys, non-therapeutic, college-prep boarding school built on the pillars of academics, athletics/fitness, faith, and character. The Hargrave Community Counselor provides direct support and interventions for boys experiencing emotional, psychological, or behavioral concerns such as homesickness, anxiety, depression, anger management, and trouble with social relationships. The Counselor also serves as a consultant to faculty, staff, and Hargrave parents and interacts with a student’s psychiatrist, general physician, or school counselor where appropriate. The incumbent must be able to work collaboratively with Hargrave’s full-time School Counselor. This position is to be filled by a licensed or provisionally licensed clinician to practice mental health therapy within the Commonwealth of Virginia. The position is part-time, about 10-15 hours/week.

Detailed description:

  • Provide crisis intervention and emergency services as needed.

  • Provide psychological and behavioral testing as deemed necessary.

  • Provide appropriate diagnosis and maintain adequate recordkeeping.

  • Provide referrals as needed to other community resources and coordinate services with other mental health providers and physicians, especially where longer term therapy is needed

  • Provide as deemed necessary and appropriate, individual therapy for students in grades 7 through 12 and post-graduate, which includes performing diagnostic assessments, developing treatment plans, and continuing evaluation of service needs.

  • Participate in an evaluation and treatment team approaches that include working with Hargrave’s faculty, residential/military staff, coaches, and other staff.

  • Provide professional development and additional training for faculty and staff as needed to support improvements in academic achievement, student communication and social skills, addressing diverse learning needs, prevention of bullying, and help stakeholders understand their child’s learning and mental health needs.

Basic skills and competencies:

  • Adolescent therapeutic skills and training to include knowledge of development and stage of life issues particularly related to children;

  • Effective communication and organizational skills;

  • Working knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to the mental health treatment of children;

  • Working knowledge of typical academic concerns (i.e., ADHD, learning differences);

  • Ability to work on a team and collaborate with all necessary members.


  • Must be licensed to practice therapy (LCSW, LPC, LMFT, etc.)

  • Experience working with adolescents in school or community settings
