COMMANDER – ENGINEER TRAINING

Chicago Fire Department

Bureau of Administrative Services

Number of Positions: 1

THIS POSITION IS ONLY OPEN TO CAREER SERVICE UNIFORMED MEMBERS OF THE CHICAGO FIRE DEPARTMENT

Under direction of the District Chief of Training and/or designee, assists in the management of Quinn Fire Academy and performs related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

· Works closely with the Drivers Training divisions to maintain the licensure and certification of the department’s Fire Engineers drivers and operators.

· Responsible for the training and operational capability of all Engines assigned to the Training Division and front-line apparatus.

· Responsible for the maintenance and operational capability of all department off-site pumping sites.

· Responsible for the maintenance and operational capability of all hose, fittings, and all other related equipment assigned to the Engineering Division.

· Responsible for coordinating with testing company as a subject matter expert for any future Engineer exams.

· Responsible for recruiting and coordinating safety officers at all pump test sites.

· Responsible for maintaining all training records pertaining to Engineer Training and Engineering promotions.

· Serves on the department’s Vehicle Accident Safety Review Board.

· Develops schedules and coordinates all training associated with certification, licensure, and sustainment training of all CFD Fire Engineers.

· Serves as an intermediary between uniformed field personnel, division heads, and department management in the resolution of problems and complaints.

· Interprets, explains, and enforces department and City policies and procedures, general orders, and the collective bargaining agreement.

· Responsible for maintaining the chain of command and giving direct orders to members, as required.

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Chicago Fire Department rules, regulations, practices and procedures and the Labor Contract.

THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE

Qualifications:

· Career Service status as a uniformed member of the Chicago Fire Department is required. Ten (10) years as a uniformed member of the Chicago Fire Department with a minimum career service rank of Fire Engineer (including EMT or Paramedic)

· Three (3) years of technical/specialized work experience in office administration or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience

· Office of the State Fire Marshal Instructor II certification or higher certification

· Office of the State Fire Marshal Fire Service Vehicle Operator (FSVO) certification

· Office of the State Fire Marshal Vehicle and Machinery Operations (VMO) certification

  • A valid State of Illinois non-CDL Class B driver's license is required

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

· Possession of the Office of the State Fire Marshall Fire Apparatus Engineer (FAE) certificate

· Prior Fire Engineer experience

  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office programs PowerPoint, Word, SharePoint, and Excel

  • Licensed 3 rd Party Safety Officer through the Secretary of State
