The Director of Engineering will be responsible for overseeing the PV and Battery Storage Engineering activities, including completing engineering initiatives, project development engineering, energy modeling, project detailed design, and commissioning support/performance testing of projects. This position plays a key role in the department by managing both the PV and energy storage engineering resources in the distributed energy space across a number of projects. The candidate will be responsible for completing the work primarily through internal or external resources, but may be required to complete work directly as needs arise.
Role Responsibilities:
Plan, supervise, manage, and coordinate the PV and BES Engineering Design efforts through both in-house and internal or external resources
Resolve issues as they arise through the development and construction process
Keep abreast of tariffs, local utility design standards and development requirements
Ensure all design deliverables meet the internal engineering standards
Manage both internal and external resources to complete all technical support for both the development and Construction of PV and BES projects
Prepare and maintain external engineering specifications and scopes of work
Review and confirm the accuracy of the work performed and methods used by the engineering staff or external resources
Continually review and evaluate new and existing approved equipment and technologies. Where appropriate, update system design standards or approaches
Mentor engineering staff members and enable their growth
Participate in industry trade groups and policy working groups addressing the modernization of the distribution system policies and tariffs
Review/Approve detailed engineering design work. Follow and provide feedback to refine engineering processes and procedures with other engineering staff. Answer questions and resolve issues brought forth by the sales, engineering, and project management team members
Spearhead various new product development initiatives and identify areas of value engineering
Review the design approach methods and equipment selection to ensure the best overall project design and customer goals are achieved
Establish and maintain budgets for 3rd party Engineering firms
Communicate and collaborate with other departments, suppliers, and contractors
Maintain technical contract exhibits for the construction of projects through EPC’s or subcontractors
Support Development, including project cost estimating, and the Construction of projects, and perform on site visits
Establish and uphold standard processes and procedures by the Engineering team
Review Power Purchase Agreements and EPC agreements to ensure design compliance
Oversee various testing and quality assurance checks by Engineering staff to verify the quality of completed projects
Job Requirements and Experiences:
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
PE Registration as a Professional Engineer Required
Minimum 10 years of experience in Renewable energy projects in both PV and Energy Storage
Demonstrated knowledge and experience working in the Renewable Engineering space and leading teams of multi discipline Engineers
Organizational competencies and project management skills to keep projects, processes, and the entire engineering team on track
Ability to work individually or as part of a team
Self-motivated attitude with the ability to multitask and thrive in a timeline-driven environment
Competent with computer software, including Microsoft office suite, AutoCAD, and SKM/ETap
An analytical and mathematical mind, capable of evaluating and solving various problems
Capable of interacting effectively across organizational boundaries to achieve goals and meet deadlines
Ability to integrate both verbal and written communications with interpersonal skills
Leadership skills are necessary to manage and work within a cross-functional team
Specifications and SOW and contract writing
Ability to represent the company well
Detail-oriented engineer with an eye for the big picture
Strong interpersonal skills to interact and work effectively across internal or external organizational boundaries to achieve goals and meet tight deadlines in both group or independent work
Able to plan and manage the development and production of permit and contract documents for the development and construction of both PV and Energy storage projects
Ability to push/pull/lift equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
Ability to work safely in extreme field environments (hot sun, cold, etc.) where necessary
Ability and willingness to travel to and from job sites as required to support the projects development and construction
Strong leadership and communication, and ability to meet deadlines
Strong organization skills and ability to coordinate multiple tasks and deliverables
Motivated self-starter, goal-oriented, and strong problem-solving abilities
Proven ability to empathize, build relationships, and effectively communicate with people from a diverse set of backgrounds
This position is an office-based role with some travel and visits to other RWECE offices and field locations
Must be able to sit, walk, or stand for long durations of time
Pay range: The annual base salary range for this position in Illinois or New York is $160,000 - $200,000. The listed salary range represents our good faith estimate for this position and represents the range for new hire salaries across all U.S locations. Please note that the salary information is a general guideline only. RWE considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s education & work experience, training & certifications, and key skills as well as market and business considerations at the time of the offer.
