Powell Industries, Inc. Mechanical Engineer in Chicago, Illinois

A Mechanical Engineer designs, develops, and tests mechanical devices, equipment, and systems. They analyze problems, propose solutions, and oversee the production and implementation of mechanical components used in electrical systems. They work in various industries such as automotive, aerospace, energy, and manufacturing. Responsibilities may include conducting research, creating technical drawings, performing calculations, and collaborating with other engineers and professionals to ensure the successful completion of projects. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills are essential for this role.

Job Responsibilities

  • To modify, enhance, and create established standard designs and parts for our products.

  • Design standard jobs with guidance.

  • Read and interpret customer job specifications.

  • Order materials.

  • Create drawings.

  • Interface with sales, customer (with supervisor) and shop.

  • Completed task are check by more senior engineers.

  • Available to answer technical questions from designers.

  • Troubleshoot mechanical problems with equipment in production and test.

  • Create documentation to support assembly.

  • Innovative to improve existing products based on quality, delivery, and cost.

  • Learn policies and procedures, work instruction, ISO policies, Safety Rules and Regulations, and vendor products.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Technology or related area.

  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in an Engineering role within electromechanical industry.

  • Experience with electrical design.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic understanding of power systems.

  • Advanced drafting/CAD skills.

  • Proficient with electrical design.

Skills, Abilities & Other Requirements

  • Basic computer skills using Oracle, Word, Excel.

  • Ability to interact on a regular basis with shop personnel.

  • Able to apply product knowledge and technical skills to solve simple application problems independently with minimum supervision.

  • Ability to order materials electronically.

  • Able to read and interpret electrical symbols, characters, and drawings.

  • Able to apply (told by others what it means and which code) ANSI and other as it applies to the day-to-day activity.

  • Ability to apply industry standards as applicable to job and product.

  • Able to design one product in the most economical way while achieving quality.

Working & Environmental Conditions

  • The employee typically performs duties in a normal office environment. There will be some work in a shop environment and exposure to the elements of our shop. Additionally there may be some work performed in the field with exposure to construction sites or active customer facilities.
