Chicago Transit Authority Senior Paralegal – Labor and Employment in Chicago, Illinois
Senior Paralegal – Labor and Employment - ( 220000AE )
Provides professional legal support to attorneys in CTA’s Labor and Employment Division by providing legal research, gathering information, reviewing documents, drafting legal communications, and assisting in file preparation for hearings and trials. Assigned to midlevel and complex litigation matters in state and federal court.
Assists Attorneys with federal and state court litigation, including class action cases.
Gathers documents, conducts e-discovery searches, conducts legal research and searches CTA databases.
Drafts discovery responses, drafts subpoenas, makes copies, abstracts depositions and redacts confidential information.
Maintains privilege and production logs, and assists at trials.
Provides support to Attorney for arbitrations, administrative charges, and unfair labor practice charges. Drafts responses to administrative charges and unfair labor practice charges. Gathers documents and information necessary for cases, organizes exhibit binders, and makes copies.
Makes deliveries to courts, agencies, and law firms. Files documents at the various courts and administrative agencies.
Locates witnesses and arranges witness appearances for proceedings.
Attends public bid openings and reviews related contracts.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Reporting to this position are the following jobs:
Obtaining knowledge of CTA internal rules and procedures.
Understanding all facets of how CTA operates, including disciplinary procedures, written policies and administrative, departmental interactions with other departments and the general public, safety measures, facilities maintenance, and the overall structure of CTA.
Locating and retrieving in a timely manner all relevant internal documents from various departments and locations outside the law department.
Accurately organizing and maintaining case files for attorneys with heavy caseloads.
Bachelor's degree and/or a paralegal certificate from an ABA accredited institution, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Three years of experience as a Paralegal, Labor and/or Employment preferred or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Experience conducting thorough legal research and preparing discovery responses and other legal documents.
Must be a Commissioned Notary Public within ninety (90) days of employment in this position.
Requires sitting for extended periods of time, standing, visual acumen, manual dexterity and fingering for working with computer keyboards.

Service Area Requirement: Exempt (Non-Union) employees must live within the boundaries of the CTA Statutory Service Area either at the time of employment or within 6 months of beginning employment at CTA.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Working knowledge of legal terminology and court procedures.
Proficient in performing standard and non-standard discovery tasks.
Possess the proper disposition to maintain amicable working relations with various levels of personnel within the Law Department and throughout the Authority.
Proficiency in abstracting and summarizing complex documents and transcripts.
Working knowledge of how to properly prepare and serve a subpoena for deposition or trial.
Strong Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) skills.
General office environment.
Required to regularly travel to various CTA, vendor, and transit property locations as well as state and federal courts within Chicago.
Required to regularly travel to other Federal and State agencies to file documents.
Exposed to weather conditions when traveling to various locations.

- Computer, telephone, fax, trial visual aids, on-line legal research, document management software, and litigation support software.

Final salary will be determined in part by the qualifications of the selected candidate and may be higher or lower than target.
