Job Description Summary
The Wound Nurse Consultant is responsible for performing individualized
and age-specific assessment of patients with wounds or ostomies and, in
conjunction with the interdisciplinary patient care team, developing
individualized treatment plans. Instructs patients and significant
others in care treatment, disease and/or illness, expected outcomes, and
home care. Serves as a consultant for wound, fistula management, ostomy,
and continence care education. Under the general supervision of the
Director, Nursing Education, analyzes and prepares quality reports on
hospital acquired pressure injuries.
The Wound Nurse Consultant will consistently demonstrate support of the

Job Description
The Wound Nurse Consultant:
- Educates clinical policies and procedures for wound, ostomy and
continence care prior to orientation.
- Provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, therapists and
students related wound care, fistula management and ostomy care.
- Assesses wounds, fistulas and ostomies, provides treatment
recommendations to the patient care team and evaluates treatment
effectiveness.
- Provides patient education and recommendations for home care
products. Provides ongoing in-service education to medical and
clinical staff. Implements initial and ongoing competency skills
training and evaluation. Collects data on pressure injuries (present
on admission and hospital acquired), prevention practices and
outcomes.
- Conducts documentation reviews and audits to prepare
organization-wide reports on incidence of hospital acquired pressure
injuries.
- Collects, analyzes, and/or presents data regarding orientation,
in-service education, pressure injury incidence and trend analysis,
and other activities. Maintains records of activities as required by
the Institute and various accrediting bodies.
- Performs all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest
of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.
Reporting Relationships
- Reports directly to the Director, Nursing Education and Staff
Development
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
- Level of knowledge normally acquired through completion of a BSN.
- Current State license as Registered Nurse.
- A minimum of 3 years relevant clinical experience. Professional
certification by the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Society in wound
care and at least one other practice area (ostomy or continence) is
preferr d.
- Interpersonal skills needed to effectively communicate with all
levels of health care professionals, to motivate and instruct staff
therapists and students, and to represent the discipline, and the
Shirley Ryan AbilityLab to the general public and professional
organizations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel and
documentation/retrieval in electronic medical record systems.
- Basic knowledge of quality monitoring and quality improvement
practices. Ability to analyze data and recognize trends.
- Able to be available for consults at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and
across the continuum of care.
Working Conditions
- Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or
extreme temperature.
