Hamilton College Assistant/Associate Director for Advancement Content in Clinton, New York

Hamilton College is one of the leading liberal arts colleges in the nation, and is located in the village of Clinton in beautiful upstate NY. The Alumni Office works to keep Hamilton's 20,000 alumni connected to the College through meaningful outreach, volunteer opportunities, and engaging events on and off campus.

As a member of the Alumni Office, and under the direction of the Advancement Creative Director, the Assistant/Associate Director for Advancement Content’s primary responsibility will be to partner with colleagues throughout the Advancement Office to increase alumni engagement and philanthropic support. They will think strategically, write persuasively, and work closely with colleagues to help plan, develop, create, and execute promotional campaigns that portray Hamilton as a cause worthy of support and participation.

This is an exempt position with a pay range of $58,459 - $60,000 for an Assistant Director and $61,000 - $63,000 for an Associate Director.

Responsibilities

  • Write compelling copy for Advancement initiatives (e.g., brochures, solicitation letters, emails, website, dedications, citations, event invitations, etc.) that moves readers to action; must be able to craft a compelling story, especially about the impact giving has on students’ education

  • Partner with colleagues in Advancement to plan and execute short- and long-term promotion campaigns to increase constituent engagement and philanthropic support. This includes Hamilton Fund communications/solicitations, gift planning materials, dedications, student-centric initiatives, donor recognition projects, overall engagement strategies, Fallcoming, Reunion Weekend, and other events. Specific priorities include:

  • Assist with developing and implementing multifaceted campaigns to meet annual fundraising, participation, and overall engagement goals

  • Support projects and programs such as Impact Report, 1812 Leadership Weekend, and Alumni Council initiatives

  • Help implement initiatives to increase membership in the Joel Bristol Associates

  • Assist with developing and executing multifaceted, creative ways to thank donors annually

  • Contribute to the production of videos

  • Generate social media assets, maintain the alumni Instagram account, develop strategy, and collaborate with Hamilton’s college-wide communications department for broader social media outreach

  • Be reactive to the ever-changing day-to-day needs of the Advancement Office and adjust priorities and projects accordingly

  • Assess the effectiveness of various content development efforts in Advancement

  • Other duties as assigned

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, journalism, or a related field preferred, plus a minimum of three years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be acceptable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must understand and communicate well the mission and strengths of Hamilton. Must appreciate current trends in higher education and important characteristics of the College’s many audiences, including their relevant interests and needs, and levels of knowledge about and engagement with the College

  • Must think creatively, act strategically, and possess strong writing and editing skills for both digital and print formats. Also essential are proofreading, interpersonal and time-management skills, extraordinary attention to detail, and the ability to meet deadlines and manage projects

  • Must have knowledge of promotion concepts and experience implementing integrated promotion initiatives; familiarity and comfort using data to inform planning are essential

  • Must be self-motivated, organized, detail-oriented, and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously

  • Desire to work collaboratively and build productive relationships with colleagues and constituents

  • Ability to adjust and utilize new technologies

  • Determine the most effective way to deliver the College’s messages

  • Ability to communicate Hamilton’s fundraising and engagement themes to its constituents through carefully constructed stories

  • Follow the College’s editorial and graphic styles

  • Maintain a keen understanding of the College’s primary themes

  • Make reasonable effort to become involved in the Hamilton community
