Job Summary

Configures, administers, implements, and maintains programs/ systems/ equipment required to support the AEP generating fleet with a journey level proficiency. Stays up to date on program requirements, system/equipment upgrades, and operational issues. Assumes a lead role, in collaboration with local and/or remote resources, to support the forecasting, planning, installation, and commissioning of enhancements to these programs/systems/equipment to meet AEP requirements. Helps site personnel troubleshoot issues.

BUSINESS UNIT: Generation

ORGANIZATION: Electrical Engineering - Balanced Plant

Based on education, experience and interview, this opportunity will be filled commensurately at either title in the Technical Specialist family:

Technical Specialist Principal (grade 9) = bachelor's degree (engineering preferred) + 10 years of experience; OR, associate's degree (engineering preferred) + 12 years of experience. Professional registration or certificate related to engineering, technology or projects is preferred.

Technical Specialist Sr. (grade 8) = bachelor's degree (engineering preferred) + eight (8) years of experience; OR, associate's degree + 10 years of experience

MORE SPECIFIC TO THIS OPPORTUNITY:

With the rise in new renewable projects and an anticipated increase in number of Transformers installed on the fleet, the filling of this position at a Principal or Staff level will allow Electrical Engineering to support all generating facilities by:

- Providing Generating Facilities with expert level support in the areas of guidance, inspection, and troubleshooting for transformers and other balance of plant equipment ( Switchgear, MCCs, Circuit Breakers, Batteries, Non-segmented Bus ).

- Providing support of the NERC Compliance Regulatory requirements for the entire fleet of generating facilities. This support includes NERC Operation & Planning (O&P) PRC, TOP and FAC standards and ensuring the requirements of the NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) standards are being followed.

- Providing support of the Arc Flash Program requirements for the entire fleet of generating facilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Assumes responsibility to configure, administer, implement, and maintain specialized programs/ systems/ equipment to support the Generation Organization.

  • Supports the development and maintenance of the required processes and programs.

  • In collaboration with local and/or remote resources, leads the administration and implementation of these processes and programs for specific sites.

Supports the care and maintenance of the specialized programs/ systems/ equipment within the plant.

  • Troubleshoots system/equipment hardware and software.

  • Schedules, performs, and tests system/equipment upgrades.

  • Reviews and approves plans for changes and/or modifications.

  • Performs other project-related support activities as assigned.

Maintains strict documentation standards for the specialized programs/systems/equipment to document plans, processes, and procedures.

  • Maintains program/system/equipment records and documents plans and procedures.

  • Electronically archives records for historical purposes/evidence.

  • Serves as the primary contact for providing historical information or details about future enhancements.

  • Develops, implements, and improves tools to automate managing and reporting functions where possible.

Communicates and collaborates with local personnel to manage the specialized programs/systems/equipment in alignment with Generation’s requirements.

  • Works with Plant Staff, Plant Management, and others to facilitate a successful local program for the specialized program/system/equipment at specific sites.

  • Collaborates with other sites to recognize common platforms and to promote consistency and continuous improvement within the Generation Organization.

Coordinates and/or provides, as needed, required and appropriate specialized training of employees with a thorough understanding of any training elements that are necessary.

Participates in planning and implementing projects associated with any new program requirements or system/equipment upgrades or repairs.

Leads, facilitates, and coordinates work activities of others within the work group, team, department, corporate entity, or those external to the company as required to perform all routine work. Provides guidance and exercises judgment and discretion in providing guidance and direction to others.

Assures safety of all activities.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education : Bachelor’s degree in applicable technical field (engineering preferred) or Associate’s degree (engineering preferred) with 2 years of relevant work experience.

Work Experience : In addition to any experience required above, 8 years of direct experience and journey level knowledge of the specialized programs/ systems/ equipment is typically required for this particular role.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Physical demand level varies depending on specific job duties/requirements.

INITIAL POSITION / BASE SALARY FUNDING: ($94,225 - $143,852). In addition to base salary, AEP offers competitive Total Rewards including: discretionary annual incentive, 401(k), pension, health insurance, vacation, etc.
