Position Summary

The Research, Advanced Prototyping, and Innovative Design (RAPID) Laboratory within the Electro-Optical Infrared Systems (EOIS) business is responsible for all materials, Focal Plane Array (FPA) and camera research to advance EOIS technology with government and industry partners. Selected withheld and strategic efforts are also executed in the RAPID Lab to accelerate development. The Scientist II we are looking for will be an integral part of new product development in advanced infrared sensors. This person will interface and work closely with other team members representing a wide range of disciplines and subject matter experts, including device physics, material science, readout integrated circuits, device characterization, electro-optical test engineering, electronics and system design. The candidate will be involved in the development of new infrared focal plane arrays, new Avalanche PhotoDiode based lidar sensors and 3D imaging systems. Duties will include device testing, data analysis, report generation and oral presentations.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, conduct and direct research and development projects to make fundamental improvements to product performance or to the invention of new product concepts

  • Imaging system setup, and data collection and analysis

  • 3D image processing

  • Generate reports and present technical papers

  • Provide technical expertise and assistance to other engineers and support personnel

  • Attend appropriate engineering, customer or business meetings

  • Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization

  • Other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications and Required Skills

  • Master’s degree in physical science or engineering discipline; PhD in physics, engineering or related sciences preferred

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience with infrared focal plane array testing

  • Ability to obtain and maintain US DoD clearance as needed, which requires US Citizenship

  • Understanding of the physics of photon counting detectors

  • Experience with image processing algorithms

  • Experience with Microsoft Office tools including Word, Excel, PowerPoint

  • Experience with data analysis using MATLAB or similar

Desired Skills

  • In depth understanding of Avalanche Photodiode detectors

  • Working knowledge of Readout Integrated Circuits for focal plane arrays

  • Programming with Python, C++, MATLAB, etc.

  • Optical system modeling and data analysis

Working Conditions

  • Normal for an office environment

  • Domestic travel up to 10% year

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs less than 5% per week or up to 20% per year

  • Sitting up to 75% of time

  • Walking up to 25% of time

  • Standing, Bending, Climbing, Stooping up to 10% of time

U.S. Citizenship required. This position requires an active DOD security clearance or the ability to obtain such clearance within a reasonable time after commencement of employment.
