Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

A Bachelor's Degree preferred

Appropriate Nursing Certification/RN licensed

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Ability to work well with fellow employees, administration, students, teachers, and staff.

To act as a liaison between the public and the school, and in so doing promote the general positive image of the total school system.

To promote and carry out (with teacher assistance) programs designed to prevent ill health and to improve health conditions throughout the schools.

Supervises and evaluates Health Assistants.

Conducts school health service, including physical assessment, and tests for vision.

Assumes responsibility for selection and referral of students in need of medical and dental care.

Reports to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on school health matters.

Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students.

Observes students on a regular basis to identify health needs.

Assumes responsibility, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered injury or emergency illness.

Visits student homes when necessary.

Participates with school staff in developing and implementing total school health program.

Contacts homes of children referred by principals.

Advises on modification of the educational program to meet health needs of individual students.

Prepares and submits reports for the superintendent and the State Board of Health.

Authorizes exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.

Advises teachers on health matters, particularly regarding screening for student health problems.

Assist school personnel in establishing sanitary and safe conditions in schools.

Attends committee meetings and conferences regarding health service and health curriculum.

Remains alert to prevent the spread of contagious disease, and when disease is found, shall report to the local and State Board of Health and to the Superintendent.

The nurse shall strive to put into effect all the policies concerning school health and first aid set up and approved by the board as expressed in the district's philosophy of school health (attached).

Participates in inservice training programs and conducts them as necessary.

Administers with assistance the Medicaid program.

Maintains licensure with the Iowa Board of Nursing meeting continuing education requirements.

Communication Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate with coworkers in a professional and courteous manner.

Analytical and Reasoning Skills

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

Ability to be flexible in coping with any situation that may arise.

Technology Skills

Must be able to operate a personal computer and use standard office applications and student information system software.

Must be able to use the computer to use email, complete required trainings, and enter time tracking information.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is occasionally loud.

Other Duties as Assigned

Will perform other duties as may be assigned by the superintendent or designee, necessary and appropriate to achievement of the program and/or District goals and objectives.
