Park Maintenance Worker: Department of Recreation and Parks
The Department: The Caroline County Department of Recreation and Parks maintains the
Countys public recreation facilities and open space including athletic fields, boat ramps, public
playgrounds, landscaped and natural areas, trails and a Community Center. The Department is
divided into three major divisions: Parks, Program Services and Administration. The Park
Division maintains over 290 acres in community facilities, including waterways.
About the Position: This is a skilled technical position within the Department of Recreation and
Parks, Parks Division. Primary duties include a wide range of tasks including but not limited to
facilities maintenance and repair, turf management, horticulture and landscaping, lawn care,
playground inspection, waterway clearing and general labor.
An employee in this position works for Recreation and Parks and receives general supervision
from the Parks and Capital Project Manager and/or his/her designee. Hours are scheduled to meet
the public needs and requirements and may include evening and weekend hours. Work is
performed without close supervision but is reviewed in progress and upon completion. The work
environment is characterized by conditions which may be dusty or dirty, and may include
disagreeable odors, some hazardous conditions, and heavy lifting. Position is subject to call out in
emergencies
Required Knowledge and Skills:
Ability to use hand and power tools safely and effectively.
Ability to perform routine maintenance operations and repairs without immediate
supervision.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to do necessary mathematical calculations including measuring.
Ability to write effective reports.
Working knowledge of current weed control measures as required by the Maryland
Department of Agriculture.
Ability to maintain a positive working relationship with other employees and with
members of the general public.
Examples of Work:
The following examples are meant to be illustrative rather than comprehensive:
Work safely at all times.
Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
Perform routine maintenance and repair of parks buildings, structures, and facilities
including but not limited using hand tools and power tools; painting structures, repairing
woodwork with appropriate tools; repairing plumbing fixtures; repairing plaster; laying
bricks; building sheds and other outside buildings and facilities.
Supervise private contractors including skilled and semi-skilled laborers and custodial
services.
Supervise small crews or assigned staff as needed; assure compliance with work and safety
rules and regulations; inspect and recommend improvement of work methods. File reports
of completed assignments; complete and submit other reports as necessary.
Request, receive, and complete work orders.
Maintain grounds of parks facilities.
Maintain daily records of work activities and equipment operations.
Inspect park facilities for maintenance and safety issues and report any issues to supervisor.
Read and follows maintenance schedules for County equipment.
Work individually or as a part of a team on parks facilities maintenance projects including
rough carpentry, framing, electrical, plumbing, drywall, painting, cleaning and/or moving.
Assist the Parks and Capital Project Manager or other staff with assigned tasks.
Operate equipment and perform laborer/motor equipment operator functions when
temporarily assigned to Road Division.
Perform other duties as may be assigned.
Education and License/Training Requirements:
Graduation from an accredited recognized high school or be in possession of a General
Education Equivalency Certificate (G.E.D.)
REQUIRED LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:
Maryland Class B CDL with endorsements or the ability to obtain such license within
six (6) months of employment.
Upon an employment offer, appl cants must submit to a substance abuse test and complete

Annual Salary: $41,613-$58,067 Depending upon experience
