The Department of Facilities Management supports the mission of the University
of Denver's physical resources by providing a healthy and safe educational
environment for the campus community through the services of the departments
of Capital Projects and Planning, Facilities Management, Parking &
Mobility Services, Auxiliaries & Real Estate, and Business & Operations.
Position Summary
This position performs skilled work in the construction, alteration,
repair, and restoration of furniture, doors, windows, partitions,
flooring, ceiling materials, roofs, concrete, window coverings, and
other materials used in building structures. Depending on experience, the
position may be classified as Carpenter II or Carpenter III, with Carpenter
III representing a more advanced level of expertise and responsibility.
Essential Functions
In addition to following the University of Denver's policies and
procedures, principal responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Perform skilled carpentry work, including laying out and executing bench
work in building and repairing cabinets, shelves, bookcases, and various
special projects.
- Operate hand and power saws, sanders, planes, lathes, joiners,
sharpeners, drill presses, and other carpentry equipment.
- Work with building materials to make repairs to campus buildings and
infrastructure.
- Assist in providing labor and material costs for miscellaneous projects.
- Maintain and organize carpentry shop tools, including inventory and
procurement of building materials.
- Read, interpret, and work from sketches, layouts, blueprints, or
penciled drawings.
- Assist and train lower classification, permanent, and temporary personnel.
- Drive to work sites with tools and equipment.
- Ensure a clean and safe work area.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to read and interpret documents such as material safety data
sheets, operating manuals, and work orders.
- Strong communication skills for interacting with University customers,
including students, staff, faculty, and visitors.
- Basic math skills for measuring and performing take-offs for various jobs.
- Ability to solve practical problems and manage a variety of variables.
Capability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral,
diagrammed, or scheduled form.
- Expert skills and competency in carpentry fields/functions. Knowledge of
standardized work routines and ability to follow oral/written instructions
involving multiple steps. Proficiency with all types of carpentry equipment.
- Knowledge of OSHA and EPA regulations related to the carpentry trade.
- Proficiency in computer use and software applications relevant to the job,
including Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software such
as WebTMA.
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as weights, measure areas,
and board feet.
Required Qualifications
A high school diploma or G.E.D.
- Thorough knowledge of standard methods, practices, tools, and
materials of the carpentry trade.
- Proficiency in rough and finish carpentry, including wood and metal
framing, drywall tape and finish, ceramic-glass and porcelain tile work,
and laminate work.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the
carpentry trade.
- Valid Colorado Driver's License and insurability under University
guidelines.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment physical exam and lift up to 125 lbs.
- Carpenter II: Five years of experience in the carpentry field.
- Carpenter III: Seven years of experience in the carpentry field.
Carpenter III: Extensive background in cabinet making and custom furniture.
Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)
software, including WebTMA.
- Carpenter II: Seven years of experience in three out of the five following
trades: carpentry, plumbing, painting, HVAC, and electrical.
Carpenter III Ten years of experience in three out of the five following
trades: carpentry, plumbing, painting, HVAC, and electrical.
Working Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near
moving mechanical parts, in outside weather conditions where they are
exposed to wet, humid, and hot and cold conditions, around
electricity, with chemicals, and around fumes or airborne particles.
- Occasionally, while performing the duties of this job, the employee
works in high places from extension ladders and scaffolding and in confined
spaces.
- The noise level in the work environment ranges from low to high but is
usually moderate.
Unexpected interruptions often occur, and stress levels are moderate to
high.
Physical Activities
Moderate to strenuous physical effort required, including extended periods
of standing, pushing-pulling, carrying, and lifting objects up to 125 pounds.
