Position Summary
With little to no supervision, this position performs repairs and
maintenance at a skilled or technical level in multiple trade areas with a
specialization in kitchen equipment campus-wide. Employees will be required to
understand and follow all rules and regulations put forth by the University of
Denver and the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Essential Functions
- Installs, repairs, inspects, and/or replaces the following
commercial-grade kitchen and refrigeration equipment (including but not
limited to): dish machines, garbage disposals, ovens, flattop
cooking grills, ice machines, walk-in coolers and freezers, steam
kettles, mixers, drink dispensers, coffee makers, toasters, reach in
refrigerators, pumps, motors, filters, electrical switches, and receptacles.
- Operates power equipment and University vehicles, including refrigeration
gauges, pumps, evacuation pumps, hand tools, hand drills,
specialized kitchen equipment tools, and other equipment as required.
- Develops and maintains a comprehensive, computerized preventative
maintenance program for kitchen equipment and refrigerators; keeps records
of repairs and maintenance that enable an analysis of the cost-benefit of
repair versus replacement decisions.
- Responds to equipment breakdowns in a timely fashion.
- Required to wear a pager and respond to emergency equipment breakdowns after
work hours.
- Assists other trades that have a specific license or certification.
- May direct the work of other permanent or temporary assigned personnel as it
relates to the responsibilities of this position. May also arrange for and
oversee contract labor.
- Reads and interprets blueprints, specifications, operating and
maintenance manuals, and works from sketches, layouts, or penciled drawings.
Drives to sites with tools and equipment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to read and interpret documents such as material safety data
sheets, operating and maintenance instructions, and work orders.
- Ability to write and speak effectively with employees and customers
(students, staff faculty, and visitors)
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as weights, measures, and
percentages.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables.
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral,
and diagram or schedule form. Ability to assess quickly a variety of data in
emergencies in order to develop effective solutions.
Must be knowledgeable of related OSHA and EPA regulations and be able to
effectively communicate regulations to others. Should be familiar with the use
of computers and software applications. Reads and interprets blueprints and
works from sketches, layouts, or penciled drawings.
Required Qualifications
Five years' experience in kitchen equipment and refrigerator repair,
plumbing, and electrical trades.
- Three years of experience in repairing commercial kitchen equipment
- Expert skills and competencies in the installation repair and/or
replacement of commercial-grade kitchen and refrigeration equipment.
- Must be knowledgeable of related OSHA and EPA regulations and be able to
effectively communicate regulations to others.
- Valid Colorado Driver's License and insurable by the University of
Denver's insurance carrier.
- Kitchen equipment refrigeration license.
Pass a pre-employment physical exam, and lift 100 lbs.

Working Environment
While performing the uties of this job, the employee regularly works near
moving, mechanical parts. Employees may be exposed to wet, humid, and
hot, and cold conditions. An employee works around electricity,
chemicals, and around fumes or airborne particles. Occasionally the employee
works in high places from extension ladders and scaffolding and in confined
spaces. The noise level in the work environment ranges from low to high but is
usually moderate.
Physical Activities
Moderate to strenuous physical effort is required. This position requires
extended periods of standing, walking, using hands to handle, hold,
and control tools and objects, reaching with arms, stooping, kneeling,
or crawling. This job also requires pushing, pulling, lifting, and
carrying objects of up to 100 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this
job induce close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth
perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Needs to identify and distinguish
