Job Summary

Under general supervision, provides nursing support with various functions such as; screening, medication administration, treatments, vitals, and vaccinations. Assists the staff with clinical clerical functions. Ensures smooth work and patient flow within the Denver Sheriff Health Services.

Essential Functions:

Accurately and efficiently takes vital signs and basic historical patient data. Identifies abnormal patient findings. Communicates patient concerns or significant changes in patient's health status to provider or nurse. (10%) provides safe administration of medications and immunizations (oral, IM, subcutaneous, and/or intradermal); obtains EKGs, orders appropriate tests as directed by provider; and schedules specialty and follow-up appointments as directed by provider. (10%) Prepares patients for examinations, assists with examinations, cast or splint applications, minor procedures a variety of other medically related tasks within their scope of knowledge. (10%) Documents accurately and appropriately in-patient medical record. (10%) Reports change in patient condition to appropriate health care provider in a timely manner. (10%) Prepares exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments/supplies. Prepares and maintains clinical and office supplies and equipment for treatments, including sterilization and restocking of exam and treatment rooms. (10%) Maintains a safe environment by practicing sound safety and infection control practices according to agency policies and procedures. Helps to identify safety and infection control issues. (10%) Engages in performance appraisal on a routine basis by accepting and providing constructive feedback and integrates feedback into practice. Participates in competency reviews as required by department. Assumes accountability for achieving goals set jointly with the manager for the next evaluation period. Participates in the peer review process. (10%) May perform phlebotomy and perform various laboratory procedures after competency verified. Maintains safe collection and processing of laboratory specimens. (10%) Functions appropriately in critical situations. (10%) Participates as a member of the patient care team by asking for additional tasks or helping others when not busy. (0%) Quality control on appropriate systems and equipment. (0%) Ensures practice and adheres to professional standards, statutes, regulations, hospital and departmental policies, and standards of care. (0%) Provides care to patients in seclusion/restraint according to department policy and regulations. (0%) Delivers care in a nonjudgmental, nondiscriminatory manner that preserves patients' rights. Education:

High School Diploma and/or GED Required.

Work Experience:

less than 1 year Completion of a 160 hour externship Required or less than 1 year 6 month direct patient care in outpatient setting Required

Licenses:

BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures. Knowledge of and the ability to use medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment. Skill in assisting in a variety of treatments as directed. Skill in taking vital signs. Skill in maintaining records and recording test results. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, employees, physicians and the public. Ability t maintain quality control standards. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures. Ability to communicate clearly. Ability to learn and be proficient in electronic health record and paper record documentation. Utilize equipment and technology safely to provide patient care, upon completion of training and competency for applicable clinical area.
