About the Work Unit
About the Traffic Safety and Engineering Branch
The Mission of the Traffic Safety and Engineering Services branch is to strategically reduce traffic crashes and resulting deaths, injuries, and property damage; and to improve the flow of traffic through application of traffic engineering principles. Our branch exists to support CDOT's five regions, our headquarters divisions, and the greater transportation community in Colorado and the nation to achieve the safest and best operating transportation system possible for our customers. Our diverse team of problem solvers - made up of engineers, technicians, data professionals and support staff - provide services and consultation to our regions in many traffic engineering, operations, and safety areas.
About the Safety Performance and Engineering Unit
The Safety Performance and Engineering Unit (SPE), part of the Traffic Safety and Engineering Services branch, is dedicated to supporting the implementation of the Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP). This unit is responsible for providing safety oversight within CDOT, regularly briefing leaders on SHSP implementation, leading the development of an annual statewide transportation safety conference, and facilitating coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
The SPE unit plays a crucial role in informing CDOT's strategic planning and decision-making processes by developing tools that effectively measure, analyze, forecast, and communicate safety performance.
About the Position
The Safety Performance and Engineering Unit project manager position will handle the unit’s consultant contracts and serve as a negotiator and liaison between internal staff and external resources (e.g. consultants, partner units/branches/agencies, etc).
Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
Determine the business needs, and develop scope, objectives, schedule, budget and deliverables;
Create scopes, independent work-hour and cost estimates, and schedules for projects; Negotiate these items with consultant representatives/project managers;
Manage tasks, schedule, budget, quality, and risks throughout the duration of the project;
Responsible for the timely and accurate review and approval of invoices;
Review outlines, drafts, or other interim versions of project deliverables for quality and alignment with project objectives and goals;
Provide edits to consultants and, as needed, set up meetings to discuss objectives and expectations;
Document lessons learned, summary reports, and communicate project issues and accomplishments with various levels of leadership;
Foster an inclusive and collaborative environment to promote collaboration and support among involved individuals/teams;
Organize periodic check-ins between members of internal and consultant/external teams;
Track progress on the project toward overall objectives; At key intervals/milestones, guide direction of the project’s tasks and objectives to ensure deliverables will meet the goals of the project, the branch, and CDOT;
Organize collaborative meetings between the internal team and key stakeholders/partners for the project;
Communicate the impacts of the project to others involved, and seek input on project direction/goals and opportunities to work together toward common goals and/or with common resources;
Document meeting minutes and other conversations with consultants/vendors or stakeholders, including key topics, decisions made, and action items;
Communicate project progress with various stakeholders at differing leadership levels;
Cross-train on other functions of the unit to include the following areas: access management program, safety circuit rider, advancing transportation safety initiative, and safety data analysis;
Assist peers in seeking areas of improvement that may not be initially apparent which will lead to consistent process improvement and forward-thinking throughout the team;
Depending on the project needs, conduct public outreach via web updates, email newsletters, surveys, webinars, town halls, etc. Work with CDOT’s office of communications to adhere to policies and best practices, including branding and accessibility guidelines. If any outreach is conducted by the consultant, facilitate cooperation with CDOT’s office of communications and adherence to applicable standards and guidelines

Work Environment:
Primarily 8:00 am – 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday with the opportunity for flexible work hours.
Position has a hybrid schedule with a combination of in-office and remote work.
Occasional in-state overnight travel for meetings or conferences.
