The Sr. HSE Specialist is a highly skilled and experienced professional who will lead and drive the Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) strategy across bioMérieux's Durham sites. This role will provide expert guidance in developing, implementing, and optimizing HSE programs to ensure regulatory compliance, risk reduction, and continuous improvement. The Sr. HSE Specialist will serve as a key advisor to site leadership, influence cross-functional teams, and lead initiatives that align with bioMérieux's global HSE objectives
The Senior HSE Specialist is accountable for providing strategic HSE leadership to ensure the site maintains an exceptional standard of workplace safety, environmental protection, and compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local Safety and Environment regulations (ISO 14001 / 45001), bioMérieux Global HSE policies, and industry best practices to protect team members, visitors, and company property.
Lead the design, deployment, and continuous improvement of comprehensive HSE management systems across multiple site functions, including manufacturing, R&D, and commercial operations.
Develop and implement strategic HSE initiatives that drive compliance with ISO 14001 and 45001 standards and align with corporate sustainability goals.
Develop strategic direction for the HSE program, promoting continuous improvement of HSE performance inclusive of Safety Leading Metrics and Environmental Leading Metrics.
Oversee the creation of site-specific HSE policies, procedures, and programs, ensuring alignment with global HSE standards.
Provides advanced HSE support and oversight for all bioMérieux, Inc. Durham sites, with a focus on high-impact collaboration across departments:
Includes Rodolphe Manufacturing, R&D, and Commercial Operations.
Serve as a primary HSE compliance expert for the Durham sites, monitoring and interpreting regulatory changes, and advising senior management on implications.
Lead site readiness for regulatory inspections, customer audits, and ISO certification audits, ensuring full compliance with local, state, and federal regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT, NFPA).
Lead site-specific sustainability projects, including waste reduction, energy conservation, and carbon footprint reduction, in line with bioMérieux's global CSR objectives.
Collaborate with global HSE and CSR teams to share best practices and contribute to corporate sustainability reporting.
Act as a strategic partner to site leadership, providing expert advice on HSE risk management and continuous improvement opportunities.
Drive large-scale HSE projects, including the introduction of new technologies, equipment, and processes, to enhance workplace safety and environmental performance.
Lead cross-functional safety committees and emergency response teams, ensuring a proactive approach to risk mitigation.
Ensure required regulatory reports, permits, surveys, regulatory fees, and compliance plans are completed and submitted as required.
Support teams managing controlled lab environments in Industrialization and R&D, including a BSL-3 lab, warehouse, and machine shops in Maintenance.
Develop key performance indicators (KPIs) and HSE metrics, providing regular reports to senior management on performance trends and improvement initiatives.
Utilize Lean, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement methodologies to optimize HSE processes and reduce environmental impact.
Manage compliance with federal and state medical surveillance, ensuring employees maintain medical reviews, occupational, and non-occupational medical restrictions.
Establish and maintain partnerships with HSE leaders in North American and Global HSE teams.
Manage the site security program, on-site service supplier authorization, badge access procedures, routine safety/security walks, and safety equipment inspections.
Lead the site waste management program to minimize impact on landfill through alternative waste disposal methods and identify cost-saving projects, acting as a Stakeholder for Continuous Improvement projects.
Education, Skills, & Experience:
Bachelor's Degree and minimum 4+ years of HSE (Health, Safety, and/or Environmental) or related technical field experience required.
3 years of experience within an ISO 14001 / 45001 certified organization preferred.
3 years of experience with continuous improvement preferred.
3 years of experience with Environmental Sustainability initiatives preferred.
Extensive experience with regulatory compliance, risk management, and sustainability initiatives in a highly regulated industry preferred.
Experience in a high throughput manufacturing environment preferred.
Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification preferred.
Exceptional communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex HSE concepts to diverse audiences.
Individual must possess strong leadership skills and the ability to effectively influence others.
Deep knowledge of US compliance regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT, NFPA) and global HSE standards.
Ability to develop a strategy to determine action plans for risk reduction.
Strong leadership skills with the ability to influence senior management and drive cross-functional initiatives.
Advanced project management capabilities, with proficiency in utilizing tools like Microsoft Project, Lean Six Sigma, or similar methodologies.
