Position Summary

Professor Hye Jin Rho is seeking a full-time postdoctoral research associate with a PhD in sociology, labor relations, management, economics, public policy, or a related field. The post-doctoral research associate will join an NSF-funded project examining the impact of new advanced technologies on workers in the hospitality industry. The postdoctoral researcher is to contribute to data collection and analysis of a survey of guest room attendants. Responsibilities include collecting, managing, and cleaning data; conducting statistical analysis; and contributing to drafting research articles. The postdoctoral research associate will work closely with other research team members at the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, Carnegie Mellon University, and New Mexico University by participating in regular team meetings and other research-related discussions.

During the appointment, Professor Rho will provide professional and research mentoring to the research associate. Moreover, there will be opportunities to design and collaborate on other research projects that align with both the candidates’ and Rho’s research agendas. The research associate would be encouraged to co-author with Rho and maintain an ongoing program of independent research. The position will primarily focus on research, but there may also be teaching opportunities available at the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations (SHRLR).

The position is based at the SHRLR at Michigan State University. While the position will be in-person, remote work will be considered. The position duration is for one year with a start date of June 1, 2024, although an earlier or later start date may be possible.

Minimum Requirements

The ideal candidate must possess a recent PhD or be near the completion of a PhD by the start of employment. We will give preference to candidates who demonstrate experience designing and conducting rigorous research using original survey data collection, analysis of large-scale administrative data, or field experiments.

Candidates are expected to be highly proficient in Stata and/or R.

Desired Qualifications

  • Emerging or established record of scholarly activity.

  • Demonstrated ability to teach effectively at the undergraduate or graduate level.
