Primary function
A Graduate Teaching Assistant ( GTA ) under the supervision of the faculty and/or staff, may assist faculty with various lab related tasks, provide guidance to students on lab processes, protocols and safety, laboratory operational needs such as prep and set up and other associated duties, as assigned. Graduate Teaching Assistants provide professional level laboratory teaching assistance under the direct supervision of a faculty supervisor or staff. Work schedules will vary depending on department needs.

Roles/Responsibilities
· Provides general assistance to faculty members in instructional activities. May include taking attendance and monitoring students. The GTA may repeat the instructor’s instructions for the lab or review the instructor’s lecture power point if lab groups are separated by walls/space for the same lab section in a classroom.
· Proctors’ examinations, grade tests, assignments, and post-lab assessments.
· Facilitates discussion groups and group projects.
· Assist the lab instructor to provide student support in the lab including student interaction, technique demonstration, and reinforcing concepts introduced in the lecture and labs.
· Assist faculty and Lab Manager in lab preparation and clean-up. These tasks will include preparing chemical solutions/buffers, autoclaving/sterilizing materials, preparing microbiology plates or slants and cultures gathering materials and equipment for BMED labs and other assigned tasks.
· Enforce laboratory rules and procedures while interacting with students and serve as a positive and professional role model.
· Graduate Teaching Assistants are also responsible for maintaining professional interactions with their students, staff, faculty and supervisors. They will submit biweekly reports to the direct supervisor in a timely fashion and attend meetings, as scheduled.
