Job Summary

We are currently seeking a Lead Explosives Physicist . This position is located in Egg Harbor Township, NJ .

Battelle’s Infrastructure Security and Protection Security Division provides research development test and evaluation services to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The successful candidate for this position will support the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Transportation Security Laboratory (TSL) Bulk Detection Laboratory (BDL).

Responsibilities

The following are the major position responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of test article surrogates or simulants of threat materials that replicate characteristics found in the actual threats, and develop test tools, phantoms, and jigs that assist and enhance TSL’s abilities to develop effective test procedures

  • Lead the development of specialized test articles and test phantoms to serve as an imitation or representation of a specific threat article, threat condition, or performance characteristic associated with the technology being tested

  • Lead the development and execution of test methods and plans to include:

  • Operation of threat detection equipment to measure material properties and/or determine detectability of contraband materials

  • Employing physics methods and development for quantitative instrumental physical or chemical analyses to include use and maintenance of techniques and equipment such as Micro Computed Tomography (CT), image quality, and material metrology

  • Perform Panalytical X-ray Diffraction (XRD) specimen preparation and scanning as needed, including explosives and simulants

  • Maintain laboratory and equipment under ISO 9001 certification and ISO 17025 accreditation, to include authoring ISO-controlled SOPs, employee training and maintenance of training records, maintenance and calibration of equipment under ISO control, submission and completion of opportunity for improvements (OFIs), and preparation for and participation in ISO audits.

  • Perform and assist the Government in attaining, or re-attaining, as applicable, ISO 9001 certification and ISO 17025 accreditation in current areas and other certification areas as they become necessary

  • Maintain currency in chemical, radiation and laser safety, and explosive handling as mandated by the TSL procedures and training.

  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner.

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physics with 5 years of related experience or Master’s degree in Physics with 2 years of related experience or PhD.

  • Technical leadership experience overseeing and guiding the efforts of other scientists, engineers and technicians

  • Experience developing test article surrogates or simulants

  • Experience developing test tools, phantoms, and jigs that assist and enhance abilities to develop effective test procedures for performance characteristics and quality control

  • Experience developing simulant/surrogates that mimic the salient physics and/or chemical-based characteristics of threat materials so that detection technologies can be robustly tested without undue risk being placed on the testers

  • Experience performing Panalytical X-ray Diffraction (XRD) specimen preparation and scanning

  • Test method and test plan development experience that includes the use and maintenance of the following techniques and equipment:

  • Micro Computed Tomography (CT)

  • X-ray diffraction

  • Density measurements

  • Elemental analysis

  • Microstructure of materials

  • Scattering/fluorescence

  • Phase contrast imaging

  • Image quality

  • Material metrology, such as measurement of density, viscosity, or compressibility

  • High energy imaging or neutron methods

  • Hardware and/or software integration, development and operation for experimental purposes of explosive characterization research. Examples: LabVIEW, MATLAB, etc.

  • Experience following, updating, and developing SOPs

  • Experience maintaining and calibrating laboratory equipment

  • Must have experience that demonstrates comprehensive knowledge on solving complex technical problems associated with engineering and scientific activities.

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Clearance and DHS Suitability; Sole US Citizenship

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Physics with 5 years of related experience or PhD with 2 years of experience.

  • Excellent record of productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Prior experience working for DHS.

  • Active Secret Clearance.
