Raytheon in El Segundo, CA seeks a motivated senior Optical Engineer willing to apply their knowledge and experience in optical design, analysis, integration, and test to the development of advanced optical imaging telescopes, spectrometers, sensors, and special test equipment. Tasks may include performing critical opto-mechanical alignments, testing and troubleshooting of refractive and reflective assemblies, analyzing line of sight and budget allocations, optical requirements derivation, creating test and alignment plans, and interfacing with customers and suppliers. This engineer will be expected to work on-site and in a collaborative environment, at times contributing to multiple programs as a technical resource, and providing leadership and optical oversight where required. Additionally, the engineer should be capable of working with minimal supervision, anticipate and solve problems, and basically own all aspects of the optical design.

Required Skills:

Equivalent of 5+ years of experience in Optical Engineering.

Demonstrated ability to align, test, and troubleshoot refractive and reflective optical set-ups and systems.

Ability to develop, analyze, and verify optical systems.

Experience with hands-on laboratory optical alignment and measurement equipment.

Must be able to work and provide leadership in a team environment.

Self-starter, ability to execute job assignments with minimal supervision.

Demonstrated ability to transition R&D experiments into engineering products.

Excellent communication skills, both internally and with external suppliers and customers.

Ability to obtain a security clearance.

Desired Skills:

Experience with optical hardware intended for use in space environment.

Proficient in Code V, Zemax, and/or FRED.

Knowledge and experience in cleaning and bonding of optics.

Hands-on experience with optical fabrication.

Additional experience in high energy lasers and large format optics are a plus.

Existing security clearance strongly desired.

Requires advanced knowledge of work area typically obtained through advanced education combined with experience. May have practical knowledge of project

management. Practical to substantial knowledge of RTX projects, programs or systems with the ability to make enhancements and leverage in daily work.

Typically requires:

A University Degree or equivalent experience and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience, or An Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years experience

Engineering/Other Technical Positions:

Typically requires a degree in Science,Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations.

The salary range for this role is 85,000 USD - 179,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company’s performance.

This role is a U.S.-based role. If the successful candidate resides in a U.S. territory, the appropriate pay structure and benefits will apply.
