U.S. Air Force - Agency Wide RECREATION ASSISTANT in Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota

The primary purpose of this position is to assist the youth program operations with special emphasis on programs for youth 6 to 18 years of age. Under the direction of the Youth Director, incumbent plans, coordinates and conducts age-appropriate developmental, educational and recreational activities for youth.
Based on established curriculum goals, incumbent organizes, develops and coordinates activities and special events (indoor/outdoor, on/off base) for youth participants, volunteers, parents and instructors
Provides on-the-job training to volunteers according to established procedures and practices; Answers volunteers, parents, and staff questions on programs, program-related guidance, procedures, policies, and directives, etc.
Adequately controls assigned youth and ensures their health, safety and well-being at all times
Participates in the evaluation of the overall program using appropriate tools to project new, make adjustments to existing and/or eliminate ineffective programs
Organizes and participates in parent meetings, base, community, national and Air Force organizational program activities and builds cooperative relationships with related individuals, parents and organizational leadership and participants
Conditions of Employment
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-04, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities; teacher's aid in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities; aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service; aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities; summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (e.g., demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children); sales or stock clerk in a recreation supplies and equipment shop; aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility; aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities. OR
EDUCATION: Must have successfully completed a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education. NOTE: You must submit copies of your transcripts. OR
COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of developmentally appropriate activities and programs for youth, specifically pre-teens and teens. 2. Knowledge of Air Force, DoD, Boys and Girls Club, and youth sports regulatory requirements, policies and practices, certification and accreditation standards. 3. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. 4. Ability to interact with youth, parents, staff, and community, state and national organizational representatives in a variety of situations to include very challenging situations. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
